G.M's Match Preview: Rams To Continue From Where They Left Off
Tuesday, 26th Aug 2014 06:45 by George Martin

Derby will be hoping to continue from where they left off on Saturday when they entertain Charlton at home in the League Cup second round.

New signing Ryan Shotton will go straight into the Derby squad as they seem likely to ring the changes.

Whether he is due to start will be a decision made by the coaching staff. It seems like the loan deal was rushed through on the Bank Holiday Monday specifically so Shotton could be named in the squad.

There could also be starts for Best, Mascarell, Whitbread and Hughes. Buxton, Hendrick and Eustace could be some of the players possibly rested after a tough week of games.

Mascarell could start in the CDM role allowing Hughes to possibly come in for Hendrick and play further forward.

Derby will hope for a more consistent ninety minute performance than at The Valley last week where they let Charlton become too comfortable early on and gave away a penalty at a crucial time in the game.

For Charlton, right back Solly and goalkeeper Henderson look set to miss out as Peters also looks to make use of his squad by brining in the likes of Gomez, Moussa and Church.

Charlton are still unbeaten in all competitions and are much improved from last season, showing more flair going forward and increased resilience at the back.

Derby will need to keep a close eye on Vetokele who shows pace and good finishing ability with a few goals already this season. Gudmundsson and Jackson will show quality in midfield and if he starts, Moussa will provide pace and an attacking threat from out wide.

Hopefully Derby's movement and passing game will click once again as it did against Fulham with spectacular results.

When Derby attacks in the style that they did countless times on Saturday, I do not think many teams in the division can cope with them.

Therefore, I am going to go for a home win for The Rams.

Current Form / Team Stats:

Charlton (5th) - D, W, W, D: Unbeaten so far in the league including a win over The Rams at The Valley last week.

Charlton’s away record in recent cups has been poor — having lost the last 4 on the road in this competition.

Derby (7th) - W, D, L, W: Stuttering start to the season got the spark it needed on Saturday with a 5-1 win over Fulham. The question is - can The Rams produce this form regularly?

The Rams have not lost at home to Charlton in their last 5 clashes having won 3 and drawn 2.

Last Time They Met - August 2014:

Last week Charlton were lucky to hang on to win 3 - 2 against a fast finishing Rams at The Valley. Derby will be looking to reverse that result tonight in front of the home faithful.
