TOM YOUNG: Pompey “Fans Day 2013” for the fans but not necessarily just for the fans
TOM YOUNG: Pompey “Fans Day 2013” for the fans but not necessarily just for the fans

On July 20 11am-2pm, various attractions will take place in the Fratton Park car park in Fans' Day 2013. Yes it is for the fans but maybe that’s not the only reason for staging this event.

The event will give the club to really bring together a fan base which has really had an exhausting few months as well as the unforgettable and well, bonkers past few years.

However, the “exhausting” few months have led to the biggest British community owned club ever but it’s certain that a day with no pressure where Pompey fans can be amongst their fellow co-owners will be a success.

However, our well-documented past may also have a part in the way this event is organised.

Our small debts as well as our large ones have caused much controversy. Whilst our debts to the likes of HMRC almost resulted in the club being wound up, the small debts to charities and small businesses certainly ripped all dignity and respectability to the well-cherished Pompey crest instead altering its representation to one attached with much dis-honesty and lack of trust.

Now though, evidently, attempts to change this for good are being made. This is where the “Fans Day” kind of stops being for the fans, in a good way. As reported in The News, “The maiden Fans’ Day was held in May 2011 and raised almost £5,000, which was split between the Tom Prince Cancer Trust and Pompey in the Community” and will now attempt to be “bigger and better” than that occasion.

This time it will support four charities rather than two with the aim of raising twice the amount of its predecessor. With various small amounts of debts to these sorts of organisations and charities being allowed to build up, promises being made and promises being broken, its fair for those organisations and charities to have a lack of faith in the club.

These events though and the continued optimism buzzing around the club will ultimately change this though. 100% of these debts may never be paid back admittedly but members of the likes of Tom Prince’s Cancer Trust will at least breathe a sigh of relief that some justice has occurred.

The previous custodians of the club treated many without the respect they deserve, much like these charities but the new owners, the Pompey fans, will now resurrect the tainted symbol that is Portsmouth Football Club. July 20 will signify Portsmouth Football Club embarking on its first season to a long road to recovery and a better future.
