Pompey get back on the Wembley trail almost as soon as they dropped off it, with a trip to fellow League 2 club Newport County in the third round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy on Tuesday evening.

After Saturday's unfortunate FA Cup exit at Stevenage, Guy Whittingham's side will be looking to bounce back to winning form against the team managed by former Pompey defender Justin Edinburgh.

The South Wales side had a close escape in the FA Cup, having trailed for most of the first half against Conference side Braintree, but they got away with a 1-1 draw in the end.

In the league though Newport have had some good form at Rodney Road, having lost just once there to Morecambe, whilst winning five matches and drawing another.

However they suffered a serious injury blow on Saturday when their leading scorer Chris Zebrowski suffered a dislocated knee cap, which will almost certainly rule him out for some time.

"He's in some discomfort and it's not looking promising right now," Edinburgh told the BBC.

"That's just how our luck is going at the moment.

"We're having a horrendous run [with injuries] and it really took the gloss off a great second half.

"I don't know what we've done to get this horrendous run of injuries."

Newport are back in the Football League after 25 years in the non-league wilderness, but injuries are threatening to derail their promising start to the season, which included a 3-1 win at Championship side Brighton in the League Cup.

Other players out include striker Aaron O'Connor, who has not played this season and defender Byron Anthony, who suffered a broken leg at Brighton in August.

Lee Minshull, Adedeji Oshilaja, Andrew Hughes, Andy Sandell and Max Porter are also currently on the injury list as well.

Newport won at League 1 Crawley 3-2 in the second round the JPT to reach this stage, having been given a bye in Round One.

Pompey last played Newport in April 1983, when they won 3-0 at Somerton Park, Newport's former stadium, in a third division match.
