No top half finish for Pompey - but who cares!?
No top half finish for Pompey - but who cares!?

Pompey manager Andy Awford reflected on his team's 13th-place finish in League Two - and said it was nine places better off than he'd have settled for when he took over.

The Blues were 22nd when Awford became caretaker manager on March 27 and finishing one place out of the relegation zone was his aim over the rest of the campaifn.

Five wins and two draws later, Pompey can be disappointed not to have finished in the top half and there are plenty of positives to build on over the summer, ahead of a new campaign that many hope will bring a serious promotion bid.

The 3-3 draw with Plymouth came courtesy of Danny Hollands' hat-trick - the downside being that Pompey allowed Plymouth equalise three times.

Awford told the club website: 'We were in front three times, so to get pegged back three times was a bit disappointing. We were flying when we were 3-2 up and I was hoping we would kill the game off, but unfortunately that didn’t happen and Plymouth caught us late.

'But I’m not going to start criticising after the effort and results we’ve seen over the last seven games. The players have been a real credit to this club and I thought the performance was up there with the best we’ve seen this season.

'Our lads were excellent, but you don’t always get what you deserve in football. We’d have taken 22nd when I first came in, so to finish 13th is pleasing. Five wins and two draws from those seven games was beyond anyone’s wildest dreams.'
