Pompey slipped out of the JP Trophy without much of a fight as Northampton won at Fratton with a goal in each half either side of a Ryan Taylor strike.

The defeat made it four games without a win for theBlues and puts the pressure on for Saturday's League Two home encounter with Mansfield.

David Moyo put the Cobblers ahead halfway through the first half but Taylor's well-taken goal, set up by a pass from Alex Wynter, made it 1-1 before the break.

Pompey were poor after the interval and Kaid Mohamed's close-range goal ten minutes into the half was enough to put Northampton through.

The sight of sub Adam Webster going off with a serious=looking injury only deepened the gloom.

Pompey: Jones; Wynter, Ertl (c), Devera (Webster 8 (Shorey 60)), Butler; Awford, Close, Atangana; Wallace (Barcham 46), Holmes; Taylor. Subs not used: Poke, Tarbuck
