Pompey have refused to confirm widespread reports that Alan McLoughlin has been told he is no longer wanted on the first-team coaching staff.

Numerous media have said the Irishman has been told he is being axed as first-team coach, but it does seem talks are ongoing - possibly about whether he would like a role away from the first team.

Those who broke the story are standing by their claim that McLoughlin is hurt and shocked to find out he is not wanted. It comes in the week he drew a large crowd to a question and answer evening at Fratton tied in with the publication of his autobiography.

Pompey came under fire for not saying anything about the matter on Friday morning but later released a statement.

The Pompey statement said: 'Portsmouth Football Club have noted the recent speculation regarding the backroom staff at the club. At this stage, it would be totally inappropriate to comment on the future of any individual employed by the club.

'The board have been in discussions with Andy Awford for several weeks about the restructuring of his backroom team. These discussions are ongoing and once they have been concluded, the club will make a further statement.'
