Lavery boosts Pompey options as Tubbs reflects on one that got away

Striker Caolan Lavery is hoping for more regular football than he has been getting at Sheffield Wednesday after joining Pompry on a three-month loan.

Lavery, who has played for Northern Ireland up to under-21 level, will wear the number 13 shirt during his time at Fratton Park but is hoping the move proves a lucky break.

The 22-year-old told the Pompey website: 'I had offers from other places a lot closer to Sheffield and in higher divisions, but I know Paul and Leam very well. Their ambition is fantastic, as is the way they like football to be played and when you look at the size of this club, I couldn’t really say no.

'I’d like to be part of the success that I’m sure Pompey will have this season and I’m looking forward to getting started. At the age I’m at now, I need to be playing games on a regular basis and scoring goals.'

Lavery's arrival comes with two other forwards, Jayden Stockley and Adam McGurk, sidelined through injury, leaving Matt Tubbs as the only out-and-out striker fit for selection.

Tubbs is celebrating a double that downed Cambridge on Saturday but he said he would not be claiming a hat-trick, as some had suggested he'd scored - confirming that Pompey's equaliser was an own goal.

'Their defender — unfortunately for him — sliced the ball into the back of his own net. The second was a great counter-attack and Gary Roberts has seen me out of the corner of his eye before putting the ball on a plate for me,' Tubbs said.

'Thankfully I was in the right place at the right time and was just pleased to see it end up in the back of the net. That’s 11 in nine games for me against Cambridge and eight in four at this ground — I seem to enjoy playing against them.'
