Something has to give? Not quite but Pompey-Plymouth could be a classic
Something has to give? Not quite but Pompey-Plymouth could be a classic

For a team whose shortcomings at home have been well-chronicled this season, Pompey go into the game-that-is-not-a-dockyard-derby in pretty healthy form in front of their own supporters.

Only Newport County have dented the Blues' Fratton Park since February 6 - either side of that defeat have come some impressive victories and a fair few goals.

But Plymouth arrive at Fratton with one of the division's better away records - they have won 10 and drawn five of their 20 games on the road - so this game does appear to be set up to be a classic, if not quite a something-has-to-give game.

It's all about the battle to finish third now (although second spot is not out of reach yet for Pompey or Plymouth) and as the two south-coast sides kick off at Fratton, they will do five points and three points respectively behind Accrington, who are at No3 at present. Pompey, crucially, have a game in hand over all the sides above them.

Manager Paul Cook is urging his players to seize the moment and is expecting a crackling atmosphere. He told the Pompey website: 'There will be two strong sides out on the pitch on Saturday and it’s great credit to Derek Adams, his staff and players that Plymouth have been front-runners for much of the season.

'There is a belief at the moment that we have all the momentum and they have none. I don’t really buy into all that because they’re above us in the league, so have obviously managed to do alright.

'But if you want to be promoted then you have to do well in big games — I’m sure the fans have seen a few of them down the years. Everyone should be looking forward to 3pm on a Saturday because there will be that big-game feeling and the pitch is looking immaculate.'

Cook seems set to go with an unchanged side for the fourth straight game. Plymouth have worries over the fitness of Reuben Reid, but Jake Jervis is set to feature against one of his former teams.
