Another Pompey legend has gone - Nicky Jennings has died at the age of 70.

Jennings was a Fratton favourite in the late 1960s and early 1970s. A Pompey spokesman recalled: 'A diminutive — but skilful — left-winger, he netted on his debut in a 3-2 victory over Rotherham at Fratton Park, going on to score 50 goals in 227 appearances.

'Among his accolades was the Player of the Year trophy in 1970, thanks to a number of stirring performances for an underachieving side. 'Jennings’ second season at Pompey saw them top the Division Two table ahead of a clash with fellow high-fliers Blackpool in December. He broke his ankle in that match and was out of action for seven weeks, during which time results took a turn for the worse and the club ended up in fifth spot.

'That was the nearest Jennings came to glory with the Blues, who suffered more than a decade of mid-table mediocrity. In the summer of 1973, new chairman John Deacon backed up his pledge of promotion to the first division by making a number of big money signings. The arrival of Peter Marinello ultimately signalled the end of Jennings’ Pompey career and he soon became a regular for the reserves.'

Jennings moved to Exeter and scored 15 goals in 125 games.

Pompey's statement added: 'Portsmouth Football Club send their sincere condolences to Nick’s family and friends. His funeral will be held at Bournemouth crematorium from 11am on June 20.'
