Leyton Orient 0 Pompey 1: Blues have faith in Christian
Saturday, 8th Oct 2016 20:23 by pompey-fans.com staff

Pompey's promotion push is back on track after a deserved 1-0 win at Leyton Orient.

Christian Burgess's header 12 minutes into the second half was all that separated the sides in the final scoreline but Paul Cook's side could easily have won by more.

With Kyle Bennett and Amine Linganzi drafted into the starting line-up, Pompey had the best of the first half and could feel unfortunate not to be in the lead at the break.

Conor Chaplin produced a superb finish on the volley from an Enda Stevens cross into the middle but it was ruled out for offside.

Then Chaplin couldn't finish after Gary Roberts squared to him when Pompey had pounced on defensive hesistancy by Orient deep inside their own area.

Pompey had two penalty appeals and the Londoners had one of their own, but the referee was having none of it in any instance.

Burgess headed Pompey into the lead on 57 minutes when Roberts won a corner on the left and the defender rose from Carl Baker's corner to plant a header just inside the post.

Danny Rose and Curtis Main came on - Rose replacing Linganzi, who had shone on his full debut.

Roberts and Baker both went close to making it 2-0 - as did Orient defender Nicky Hunt when he headed a cross against his own post.

There were memories of points thrown away last season as the clocked ticked down with only one goal in it but Orient gave David Forde few scares and Pompey had their first win on the road since August 27 to move up to fourth.

Pompey: Forde; Evans, Burgess, Clarke, Stevens; Linganzi (Rose 67), Doyle (c); Baker, Roberts, Bennett (Lalkovic 82); Chaplin (Main 67). Subs not used: O’Brien, T.Davies, Lalkovic, Smith

Referee: Christopher Sarginson

Attendance: 6,078 (1,328 Pompey fans)
