Suddenly there's two forwards staking a Pompey claim

Jamal Lowe pushed a claim for a first-team call-up with a goalscoring performance against Exeter for the reserves - but he will find someone else ahead of him in the queue.

The recruit from Hampton and Richmond scored just eight minutes into his Blues debut only to be outshone by Conor Chaplin, who got a hat-trick in the 6-2 win.

Adam Buxton and Amine Linganzi were also on target and afterwards coach Ian Foster told The News he had been impressed by Lowe's bow. ‘Jamal’s whole performance was very pleasing. ‘He worked very, very hard and played a number of different positions,' he said.

‘Jamal’s whole performance was very pleasing. He worked very, very hard and played a number of different positions. He initially played on the right of the attacking midfield three in a 4-2-3-1, he can play any of those three positions behind the striker.

‘Later we went three at the back and he played off the two strikers, Conor and Harvey Bradbury. That’s what Jamal can offer us, you can see technically he is a very, very good player and also got a goal. It was a second phase from a set-piece, buried it right-footed in off the post.'

Paul Cook is under mounting pressure to try someone else up front in place of out-of-form Michael Smith.
