Assist king Kennedy: I was just doing as I was told!

Matty Kennedy says he was just doing what he was told when he got an early cross in for Brett Pitman to head Pompey's winner against Southend.

The winger impressed after coming off the bench for the second half against the Shrimpers and put in a perfect ball from the left wing for the Blues' top scorer to put away.

Kennedy, who said he was delighted to be back on the pitch after a brief time out of the starting line-up, told www.portsmouthfc.co.uk: 'Both teams had their chances in the first half and it could really have gone either way. But the big man’s popped up with a header again and I just get told to cross the ball so he can get on the end of it.

'He scores a lot of goals and has done his job for the team yet again. He does it week in, week out. We’re always working hard with our crossing in training, so it’s obviously nice to see that paying off on the pitch.

'It’s satisfying when you’re putting in all that effort during the week and then come away with the victory on a Saturday.'

Kennedy hopes to keep his place for Tuesday's trip to Peterborough and next Saturday's home clash with his old club Plymouth.
