Donohue secures trophy progress for Pompey

A fine strike by Dion Donohue made it two Checkatrade Trophy wins out of two for Pompey and ensured their progress to the knockout stages.

The goal came eight minutes before the break when Lee Mason fed a pass to Donohue - who has had a frustrating time out with illness and injury since the summer.

The utility man took the ball down the left then cut inside and fired a neat finish past keeper Yusuf Mersin.

Mason should have gone from provider to scorer near the end of the second half but he skied a penalty over the bar and out of the ground - admittedly with only a very low stand roof to clear. The penalty followed a foul on Anton Walkes.

Donohue's performance was a big plus on a night when the match was no classic, with a crowd of just over 1,200 boosted by a travelling support of 400. Other highlights were debuts for Louis Dennis and 16-year-old full-back Haji Mnoga.

Pompey: McGee; Mnoga (Naylor 65), Burgess, Walkes, Haunstrup; Close, Rose; Evans (Clarke 46), Dennis, Donohue (B.Thompson 64); Mason. Subs not used: MacGillivray, Read, Pitman, Hawkins.

Referee: Tim Robinson

Attendance: 1,268 (484 Pompey fans)
