Reflecting on the 141 York supporters who travelled to Portsmouth last night to see the team beaten 6-0. Left me thinking about the worst away day that people have had. Could be unfriendly locals, the weather, or just the result.
There have been many, but for me the day I hosted a table at Elland Rd, for a group of predominantly Leeds supporters, when Brian Deane finally worked out how to score, is right up there...

No they stayed up that year,and so did we after beating palarse 6-0.When you look at the teams in the division that year it’s very surprising at where some of them are now.
Stockport,Bury And Port Vale were all playing championship football that year.
I just looked at the table for that year and 4 clubs finished on 47 points.Portsmouth,us,Port Vale And Bury.Bury we’re relegated on goals scored rather than goal difference.They were 5 goals better than Vale but hadn’t scored as many.Tough one to take that. [Post edited 28 Apr 2018 18:52]

I remember the Palace game well indeed (there too) loads locked out that day.
I couldn't remember who did go down, but year looking at some of the sides from those days and seeing whats happened down the years to them, Stockport particularly is a cautionary tale - now in Conference North I think???... |  | | |

Wasn't that the same Stockport who played us off the park at LR during one end of season encounter. Think we lost 2-1 and they had a half decent side back then. Might have been the season we dropped into todays equivalent of League 1 ? |  | | |

Swansea away in 2001 at the Vetch (not the Swansea of today at all) yet we lost in those grey and black shirts, with a terrifying striking duo of DouDou and Leroy Griffiths... I forget who else played but dire we were - also on TV if I recall so little surprise in hindsight a disaster happened.

went to quite a few with them, bumped into them at more! Was with them at luton, got there about half two and it just started as soon as we got off the train. A couple of us got split up from the rest during proceedings, i ended up in a pub and drinking with some sound luton fans. met up with steve later and found out that jim had been slashed down the face. Another of our group ended up in casualty that night, claiming to have been attacked, turned out he had tripped over a kerb...,,,, | | | |

I went to many of the games listed above but I will call out two:
Luton Away FA Cup
I was with a few other on here (Pattaya R for one). Started off ok at Baker Street and then on to a pub in Luton. Plenty of beers and a bit of a sing song. Didn't bank on what happened next!!. I guess there was 8-10 of us, came out side to be fronted up by 5-10 Luton. There obviously knew who we were. To start with it was just a bit a fronting up and few right handers, unfortunately there were another 20 - 30 who were properly tooled up. Some guy came at me spraying ammonia and wearing a fukciing mask and goggles. Anyway several got a badly hurt but we all managed to get away and regroup up the road. I think we all made the game but a couple did have to go to hospital when back in London. I have never been to Luton since.
Game number 2 - Partizan Belgrade away.
Although this is thread is about worst away games which as per the result it was, it was not the worse trip. It was an absolute blast (as always supporting he R's is more than just the 90 minutes football).
Opposed form the earlier posts we did not travel on the official trip which flew in and out of Belgrade, we decided to do it on the cheap. Now low costs airlines did not exist in those days so we took the train. That would be the train which took two days to get there, one day in Belgrade and two b*stard days back.
This was all arranged by word of mouth in the Springbok a week or so before. I bought and interail ticket and met up randomly at Victoria 9.00am on the Monday morning. Eventually there was a dozen or so, including Pete and Trevor Kingham who many of you would know. Now the adventure begins.
I was 17 at the time and not the biggest of drinkers. This was my first mistake. It is a bad ideas to buy a crate of Stella and a bottle of vodka on the ferry and then consume it before we reached Paris. Now as you can imagine I was in a right old state but I did have a lucid moment. At one point it realised I was on the subway system under Gare De Nord, with no bag, no coat and no friends. I also realised that my money, ticket and passport was in my bag. Oh dear. Luckily I staggered back up to the platform level and the guys were all there, with all my stuff!!!! Hallelujah. I have never felt so relieved. Anyway we boarded a night train out of Paris and had stops in Milan and Venice for a few hours. Enough time for beers and pizza.
After that next stop was Belgrade. We arrived around 7.00am and one of the guys had found out where everyone else was staying we took taxis to the hotel. Now if memory serves me I think the next thing we did was go to the ground in the morning to get tickets. Looking back now for the life of me I cant believe we travelled all that way with out a match ticket, but hey!!
The afternoon was spent generally drinking in the hotel bar. We teamed up with another group who had travelled up form Greece by train also (some well known Ladbroke Grove residents were included). Afternoon passed with out much incident until a fight broke out outside the hotel. A young ranger's fan had had his scarf nicked and was upset and came in to the bar. Said Ladbroke Grove residents decided to retrieve the scarf, which they did but that seemed to antagonise to natives. Next thing I know half a dozen old boys who had been sitting round in the bar were now ordering around heavily armed soldiers and we were quickly rounded up and told in no uncertain terms not to leave the hotel again. The first and last time I have had or needed an armed guard.
Next was off to the match. We jumped on the buses that took everyone to the game. As I recall we just grouped ourselves together as much as possible rather than being strung out in our actual seat. I am not sure I was even in the same part of the ground as my ticket.. I don't recall any specific trouble in the ground but, fck me it was worrying!! Obviously the result didn't go our way and I think that may have saved us from Zulu Dawn. After game we are told not to leave by ourselves and get back on the supporters coaches, They took us to just outside the city and we had to take a taxi back to the hotel. Once back to the hotel we were meet by another welcoming committee but we were escorted back in. Again we were guarded, but they were only young lads them selves and ended up drinking with us in to the small hours. We were however ordered not to leave the hotel, advice I was happy to take.
The return journey was much less eventful. As it turned out we were able to stay on the same train form Belgrade to Paris. The only problem being we bought every thing from the catering car with in five minutes of departure!! I finally got back to my local in Feltham about 9.00 pm, to a loud cheer and much piss taking.
The last time Rangers were in Europe and I wouldn't have changed it for the world.

I think they played us last game of 2001 when we'd been relegated, finished with 9 man, and a 3-0 defeat?
Think Holloway played a few kids to see what was what as many would go and we were in admin and all sorts.
Bleak day that was, I think someone tried to attack Stuart Wardley ( no fear of pitch invasions as such that day) but one guy got on the pitch simply to have a go at Wardley. | | | |
