Me too. But it is the way of England, sadly.

All our great players - Rooney, Shearer, Beckham, etc - slagged off mercilessly.

They only get appreciated once they die / get ill.

Must have been quite a night out that, Dave :-)

The Peacock one always got me. It was just so unnecessary. He was an excellent player, but not THAT good like Les that it was inevitable he should leave. Didn't seem that keen on agitating for a move. We just.....sold him. With no replacement plan. With future years of Yates and Ready.

That's always the problem for us on the big player sales. We don't spend the money wisely. I'm sure Brentford will spend the Toney money very well - with us, god knows.

The fact is said something along the lines of "we go again next year" would be an odd thing to write if he didn't think he would get a new contract.

Although - thinking about it - maybe he means Pochettino and his favourite boys? (sorry can't help it)

Totally agree. An injury to either one of those for two games or more, we would have been really struggling. So fair play to the medics too.

The thread revives! For the whole of next season! Judging by that post, he's got a new contract and I am totally flabbergasted. I guess Marti is happy with that, but I find it extraordinary on many levels.

From what I can work out from Google, it seems to go WSL >> Championship >> Southern Premier >> our league

So 4th tier, but may be wrong. Part of the issue, it is sad that we don't really know!

I think we are in the league below the Southern Premier, from where you can get promoted to the Championship. I'm not sure why we aren't trying to get sorted and the women's team into the Championship, at least. I can see Palace just got promoted from there to the WSL.

It is a serious, growing market and we don't seem to be taking it seriously enough, for me.

Really well put, as ever, agree with all of it. Thanks so much for your work throughout the season.

It's interesting that there is a Marti conundrum - of course the temptation is to give him whatever he asks for, but someone has to be a grown up and offer balance. After all, as much as I love him, he won't be here long and we can't keep pivoting.

Yeah Preston are total gash, if it was anyone but them I wouldn't be surprised at WBA bottling it.

Still quite tempted by 60/1 Hull to get promoted - they will win at Plymouth, if WBA slip up and they get there then Hull would prob only be about 8/1 then....

Agreed - if Hull could somehow get in there I think they would have a very live chance

Interesting debate.

Personally, I would usually worry that relegation to League One could be permanent oblivion, but the way our crowds have stood up at the first sign of some decent football has allayed that somewhat. Makes such a difference all round if a decent-sized home ground can be packed out to stop the oblivion train and some good football in League One would no doubt still lead to the numbers.

I do think that the years we were in League One have become ever more romanticised. I know new away days are / were fun, and a win is a win, but we weren't THAT great a side to watch, I personally didn't find the Ainsworth, Bircham blood sweat and tears approach that exhilarating....and we were in the footballing backwater. Great to get out of it, but I do remember it being a bit of a slog.

Maybe I was at a bad age for it, having started with Venables and enjoyed the 90s...which meant I was never likely to be bowing down to the Holloway / Bircham idolisation I guess. Totally understand that I am in the minority there.

I don't know about that - I bet his win / clean sheet per appearance record (in a far worse team than Adel's) may compare pretty favourably to AT. You've got to keep 'em out too!

And that's with minimal help from the keeper, but I believe there is already a thread on that somewhere :-)

I agree, but you could argue:

1 - parachute money - not us, of course

2 - better financial situation +
3 - able to spend a fair bit of money - yes, if Eze gets sold maybe?

4 - transformative manager - yes, Marti

5 - a player so good they can't fail - yes, Cook. I think his impact this year was unbelievable.

My memory may be playing tricks, but it was around their keeper. I thought there was some very strange commentary (perhaps on a QPR production) where in the intro they zoom in on the keeper and said something bizarre about him having just moved house or something and needing a sudden influx of money.

Or perhaps I dreamed it all. Sounds very ridiculous now.

Was a very good day, but the keeper was Segers-esque. And that was the most bent thing I have ever seen in football.

I don't get this desire to send Armstrong out on loan. He needs serious coaching, and I would much rather it is Marti and Xavi doing that rather than some League One or Two 'ave it merchant. Although in writing that I am wondering how Eze succeeded at Wycombe.

Also, unless we really can unearth two excellent strikers, I would be very keen to have him as an option from the bench. And if he proves himself from there, he can push on.

True, Antti, but it's hard not to miss the main Ainsworth tactic of the Paul Smyth Long Throw That Doesn't Get To The Six Yard Box.

I would just take Marti being with us all season, really. Enormous task to get us top 6.

However, even with the absolute drivel he inherited, you would only need to turn 6 of our defeats into wins and we would be sixth.

You might argue that wouldn't have been impossible if he had been with us from August....

Can he do it next season? Really depends on the transfer business, ins and outs. Whether Cook stays fit. All sorts of ifs and buts. But sure as hell looking forward to finding out.
