One of their proposals - for five divisions of 20 teams - is sure to get a further push now, although I'm not sure how that helps premier league players. Ours looked totally knackered (mentally) last night. Others: such as Payet, Ozil & Hazard, don't.
Looking back just a few weeks to the friendly against Germany, we looked like a young team with skill, pace and real potential. Yep, it's different in tournaments, but what's the difference? It's got to be psychological.

Its definitely got to be psychological. All week all the players would have read and heard about is how we've never won a knockout game over 90 mins in the history of the Euro's. Add that to no experience of this type of tournament pressure before for the likes of Smalling, Walker, Rose, Alli, Kane and Dier. A manager who didnt know his best team or system didnt help either. Iceland didnt even have to be that good to beat us - we handed it to them on a plate. At least previous defeats have been against the likes of Italy and Uruguay to send us home - Iceland is a whole new low. |  |

Successive England Managers have been more concerned with what the press will say and have felt obliged to play the teams selected by them. Let's be honest, you could have picked a team of Championship players that would have thrashed Iceland last night. The idea that you change your team and formation for every game is total gateux.
The FA haven't lost the plot, they have never had one. There is insufficient money to support the grass roots game properly. Amateur football is collapsing for lack of affordable, playable surfaces. A town like Rochdale should have dozens of artificial surfaces for all standards of football, instead, we have sodden, uneven, unmaintained men's pitches where game are constantly called off and which cost too much for many teams in any case.
Did you know there is not a single grass pitch in Rochdale suitable for the RAFC academy team? Not one.
It's the old story - no thought-through investment by people who have never kicked a ball in anger and as long as getting their Cup-Final tickets and trips to World cups is at the top of the agenda, nothing will change. |  | | |

An excellent viewpoint that just about sums up the English game in its entirety. The Alf Ramsey era is a shining light amongst the crap that`s been served up for decades before and after his years as England`s coach. Yes,the whole FA system needs ripping apart and starting anew,but I think we all know that ain`t going to happen any time soon. But like somebody has already said,a new coach will be found,the new season will get underway,World Cup Qualifying will start,the hoards of brain dead "supporters" will keep going along and this latest shambles will be consigned to the history books of English football mediocrity alongside the above dross. | | | |

I do hate how the media/football hipsters consistently tell us we have to base our model on the current success story, but I did read something about the Belgian youth system that I liked before the last World Cup and I've just found it here:

The idea of implementing a 4-3-3 tactic in every Belgian youth team seems so simple but it really does seem to have worked. When you look at their squad now you can see where this has paid dividends, the players all fit into that system and have all gone through their development playing the same position in the same formation. You might argue that it limits their flexibility but I would argue that their shared knowledge of this system definitely helps them perform as a team on the bigger stages. They just need to produce a few full-backs.
They are lucky to have a few phenomenal players too of course, but it's something the FA should think about, even if copying their model wholesale (as it was suggested we should do with Brazil, France, Spain, Germany etc) is naive and futile. |  |
