So that's our first ever win at Millwall.

Are there clubs we have played in the league yet never won away?

Would be great to remove 2 from that list this season!

...and Bolton

Looking forward to a good, tough fixture on Tuesday with a bit more confidence following our back to back wins. Hilly refers to less pressure on the team going into the game. Some big decisions to take, depending on who's fit to play.

Expect to see Joe Raff start at RB alongside Keane at CB

Tbf, we've only played Bolton three times at home in the league and each game has finished 2-2.

I remember Blackpool in the league but Bolton was before my time. When was our last league game?

That'd do for me on Tuesday, too.

I might've been thinking of a League Cup tie in the mid eighties, when we lost after Ralph Wright nearly tore a hole in the back of the Sandy net, still one of the best goals I've ever seen at Spotty.

Edit: I've just looked it up, and turns out we won the first leg at home 2-1 !! Lost the second leg 5-1... 1989.

Ralph Wright? I remember the 2-1, Kevin Rose was in goal for Bolton and was chipped by Mickey Holmes while very close to his goal line. They had Philliskirk and Reeves up front, who were likened to Bros by the extremely irritating* Granada TV Sports dept at the time.

The thing with Soccerbase is that it reveals the stats but not the facts.

That 1987 game came four days after we had lost 8-0 at Leyton Orient. John Bramhall and Derek Parlane gave Dale a 2-0 lead v Bolton, before the fantastically named John Thomas scored twice for them in the remaining 20 minutes.

It's a game that's referenced a few times in Tuesday's TVOS.

Eh?

Surely calling everyone "matey" and mentioning Jack The Kitman and Dave Sweetmore ad infinitum counts as 'football knowledge'?

I do hope our last competitive game against them in 1992 gets a mention too.

That was Parlane's last goal for the club and indeed in professional football.

Serious memory issue here by me! *

I can see (in my mind's eye) Wright half-volleying the ball into the roof of the Sandy net from the edge of the box even now. I saw it from Pearl St end. He was a tall lad who played in midfeld and didn't score many - but on further checking the records it must've been the League Cup game in October 1973!

* I've said this before, but after so many games, the stats might fade but the action images don't!

The goalscorers in that game were Stuart Lee (2), Paul Jones & Alan Waldron, as Bolton cantered to a 4-0 win.

Ralph Wright played in Bolton's 2-2 draw at Spotland in April 1972 and October 1972, but he didn't score.

Interestingly, among Bolton's four scorers in those league games, one went on to play for Dale and one sort of shares his name with a future Dale player. Any ideas.....?

And, of course, Paul Jones from the cup win later played for Dale as well.

I'll have a guess. Peter Nicholson played for Bolton for several hundred years before turning up at Dale to finish his league career, whilst Garry Jones was a regular goalscorer for them in the seventies.

Re Bolton games does anyone remember us going to Burden Park in a cup game and being 3-1 up at half time but ended up losing 6-3? This was, possibly, my first ever away game so the memory could be a bit sketchy.
I do have a memory of Derek Ryder needing urgent treatment after a shot struck his windpipe whilst diving to prevent a certain goal.

The worm of time turns not for the cuckoo of circumstance.

I shall go to my doom with the memory of that goal etched forever in my mind's eye

Late on in the game, an evening match and still not fully dark so must've been August, an early stage League Cup tie

The ball bounced behind him, on the edge of the box. He swivelled and smacked it on the half-volley with his left peg and it flew - rising all the time - into the top right corner of the net. Unstoppable. The whole ground went quiet for a moment, not quite believing what they'd just seen, before erupting, including sustained applause by Dale fans

The goal happened; the game and scorer (it was a tall, lanky-haired lad, similar to Wright if not him ) aren't as important. Anyone else from back in the day recall it?
