Christmas Day Football 01:37 - Dec 30 with 1730 viewsmikehunt

This was a bit of a surprise: The last league match played on a Christmas Day was Blackpool v Blackburn in 1965 Blackpool winning 4-2. 21000 spectators
Only once since has an attempt been made to play a League match on December 25th. In 1983 Brentford had scheduled their Third Division match against Wimbledon at 11 o'clock on Christmas Day morning hoping, as a Brentford spokesman said 'to revive the old tradition of husbands going to football on Christmas Day while the wives cook the turkey'. But the wives thought differently and supporters protests saw the match brought forward to Christmas Eve when a 6,689 crowd - which was to be the second highest League crowd at Griffin Park that season - witnessed a 4-3 Wimbledon victory.
In 1954 Portsmouth played a league match at Blackpool on Christmas Day.
(Info gleaned from footballsite.co.uk)
Have we ever played on Christmas Day (or Eve for that matter) ?

The worm of time turns not for the cuckoo of circumstance.

Up until the mid 1950s there were regularly scheduled games on Xmas day. often back to back Home and away games with same opponent, Xmas day and boxing Day. I seem to recall a particularly disastrous Xmas with Carlisle that involved a 7-1 scoreline or something like that, and it included three own goals...better to give than to receive I suppose.
Games were played on xmas eve when it fell on a saturday into the 1990s.

I saw a game on Christmas Day this year for the first time ever. Seemed rather strange but it was really enjoyable.

In the 1950's it was a tradition that you played back to back games with a local rival on Christmas Day and Boxing Day. And all on a maximum weekly wage of £ 20-0s-0d

I remember my Grandad fan telling me one year, Bury went up against Bristol Rovers (I think it was Bristol Rovers anyway) on Xmas Day and Boxing Day, winning 6-0 at Gigg only to lose 6-0 away from home the following day. Madness.

Tangled up in blue.

There was a lot of that sort of thing then. I remember going over to Burnley to watch them play Utd.
Burnley won 6-1 I think. In the return match at Old Trafford Utd won 5-1. It was one of George Best's first games.
That was the Xmas that Blackburn won 8-2 at West Ham then lost the return match 3-1 at Ewood Park a day or two later. I also went to that one, it was much cheaper then and you could always pay at the gate. Crazy results !

!957-58 was the last time Dale played Xmas day part of a home and home with Wrexham, won 2-0 home on Xmas day but lost by same score the day after at Wrexham.

The Carlisle games I referred to previously were in 1954-5 season. Lost 7-2 at their place on Xmas day (though we scored 5 of the 9 goals) and lost again to them at Spotland on boxing day.. Got our own back the following season with a double over them tough that season Xmas day was a sunday so the games were played 26 and 27 December

Yes,I went to those two Burnley-United games as well. Willie Morgan and Andy Lochhead srored the six goals between them,United a shambles,Busby dropped Quixall and Herd from memory for the return bringing in Best and Willie Anderson,Best scored twice and the rest is history. The two Blackburn results were amazing,as were the two Fulham-Ipswich games. Fulham won 10-1 at Craven Cottage,Ipswich easily won the return,4-1. I think that Boxing Day of 1964,the total goals scored in the First Division that day was 60.
