Manchester born Bennett was one of a number of defensive signings following our relegation back to League Two.

His professional career started at Bolton Wanderers, but his time there was limited to the reserves which he captained on a number of occasions.

He was loaned out to Falkirk during the 2011-12 season, and was a regular in their first team squad during this time.

Before signing for Dale, Bennett had been a long term target for John Coleman who had previously tried to take him to Accrington.
