Bologna In For Gabbiadini
at 17:24:49

This is so sad - whilst 'legend' would be going a bit far he will always be a hero and have special place in mine and I am sure many Saints fans hearts for his amazing performance at Wembley when he should have had a hat trick and still nearly single handedly won us the game, plus the way he hit the ground running and scored some great goals. He also seems like a nice chap, doesn't complain like Redmond or kick opposition goalies in the face like Austin and you can forgive frustration at misplaces passes etc especially given such limited opportunities. Sell Pellegrino, keep Gabbi!

Saints V Liverpool The Verdict
at 20:01:52

Before this match I predicted we would lost 3-0, afterwards I was chiding myself for being disappointed that we only won 1-0. It was a brilliant performance, every Saints player was at least a 7 out of 10 (only their keeper merited this) with Romeu the outstanding player on a 9. I also thought the atmosphere was the best it has been in a long-time and there was a great response between players and team with St Mary's roaring them on the more they pressed Liverpool back. Even if we lose the second leg and go out, this has restored a bit of morale after a losing streak and showed that the players can play with passion and pride.

The only sour note for me, other than the referee's incompetent and biased display (clearly wants a Man U Liverpool final) was the minority of idiots who started an 'it's never your fault' chant. I don't care how many of our players they have bought, there but the grace of God go you or I regarding Hillsborough and I was pleased to see that when Liverpool responded with 'justice for the 96' the majority of the ground then applauded back.

Saints At Stoke City The Verdict
at 14:23:21

The problem is the manner of the draw...come back from 3-1 down to get a 3-3 draw and I'd have been thrilled with the point as it means we are creating and converting chances (even if conversely we would also have been defensively suspect) but to grind out a 0-0 against 10 men is just disappointing. In terms of entertainment...well maybe people would be happy if we parked the bus and nicked 1-0 results every week a la Mourinho's Chelsea of old and won everything in sight then maybe we would all be happy, but as that is never going to happen and people pay a lot of money to travel the country (and beyond this season) to watch the team then I think they are entitled to want a bit of entertaining football. Yes, we are not conceding many but I feel that's because we are essentially a jenga tower with VVD as the pivotal piece; take him out and the whole thing may come crashing down...

Could Dusan Tadic Start At Manchester United ?
at 11:13:13

Forgive me for a moment of cynicism (I am usually a very positive fan) but I think Mane might have a MOM performance a la Wanyama vs Arsenal in a bid to impress a club that makes no secret of being a suitor for his services. However, if that produces a similar result I will have no complaints!

You've missed Coutinho, would definitely take him. Otherwise agree with everything you've said.

Saints Voted Most Loved Club In The Premier League
at 13:31:35

Good to hear. From experience, if I were to do a straw poll amongst football supporting friends the majority would say Saints are their second favourite team or the team they love most/hate least. Think there are a number of reasons for this: nostalgia and affection for the genius that is Le God, the atmosphere of the Dell and beating Manure in 1976. More recently, it is the commitment to bringing through young English talent and playing exciting football and probably some sympathy for how the big clubs raid our squad every summer and yet we still excel against all expectations. Finally, I would say it's also because we have the wittiest and best-looking fans in the league too but that would be a bit biased. Proud to be a Saint!

Respect To Didier Drogba

He's also credited with being a very important part of the peace process in Ivory Coast and is clearly an inspiration to young kids there, plus has done a lot of work as Nick says in targeting poverty through the UN. On the pitch may have been a prima donna at times but is also one of the best strikers the premier league has ever seen.

Guly Heads To Chicago
at 10:11:27

Totally agree Nick, fans are quick to scapegoat a dare I say it foreign player (read Mane in recent weeks) when things aren't going our way for their perceived lack of (English) grit and graft. Although much less talented than our new Senegalese hero, Guly sometimes played a different style to his team mates meaning certain things didn't come off but every time I saw him he put n 100% effort and will always remember his two goals against Palace on Boxing Day a few years back.

Saints V Arsenal The Verdict
at 23:03:21

Nothing I write could put it as well as this Arsenal fan on the Guardian's comments section below the match report:

"Can't believe it. We pinch some of their best players and they still play us off the park! I always thought that Southampton would be the team that we see every year that starts well and then fades away after Christmas. Looks like I'll have to eat my words."

Saints V Everton The Verdict
at 17:13:25

Was pleased to see my earlier post about a return to a 3pm kick off bringing us luck proved to be true. On the downside where superstition is concerned prior to yesterday I had been to the last 4 out of 5 matches all of which we lost so better not show my face at games again! Hocus pocus aside, I was so pleased for the boys yesterday, I had made the long trip to Sheffield and like others was thoroughly unimpressed at the performance, however I could see at the end of the match that the players were genuinely devastated too, Toby in particular who held his hands up in apology as he passed his shirt to a fan was one of several who had the balls to face the music and at least give a few fans something to take home from the game.

There are lots of wider positives to look at too beyond the result yesterday, I would have snapped the proverbial hand off for 5th at Christmas given the summer we had. RK is not only a better manager but a much more likeable guy than MP and speaks so well in press conferences. Toby and Ryan have been outstanding defensive additions to the team, and although I know some fans have question marks over Fraser, I have no doubt he will be a top keeper for club and country for years to come. Pelle has already got 8 league goals and a more in the cups (and has great hair), Tadic has fantastic talents which I am sure we will see again when he is fully fit and playing in his favoured position and Long shows great work ethic and determination for the team. Add to that some exciting youngsters, the ever reliable and often unsung Steven Davis and the big improvements in Wanyama and Yoshida and it things don't look too bad.

Happy Christmas to all Saints fans and their families, looking forward to Palace on Boxing Day!

Last Saturday Home Game At 3pm For Four Months
at 14:39:08

I am usually the most logical, rational non mumbo-jumbo believing supporter, however if I am right we have not lost a 3pm home game this season (I realise we lost at Burnley at that time last week) which is hopefully a good omen and I am willing to cling on to anything at this point!

Saints V Manchester United The Verdict
at 14:30:40

Incredibly frustrating-they had two outstanding players in De Gea who stopped everything bar the goal and RVP who took his two chances clinically, everyone else was terrible. Clyne, Davis, Wanyama, Bertrand all had excellent games by contrast with Davis especially just scything through their midfield like knife through butter.

On another note, I thought the atmosphere at St Mary's was very flat, I know we are the paying customers and they are highly paid stars etc but the nervousness and negativity must have transmitted itself to the players. I was at the Emirates last week and our away support was outstanding as ever, but we were dangerously close to replicating the Highbury library feel last night, with the Man United fans fresh from their short trip down from Surrey out-singing us throughout. It's fine to say this player should have done this or that better after the game, but during it we need to give them our full support. We are better than the Arsenals and Chelseas of this world who sit on their hands, expect to always win and be entertained and only sing when they are ahead.

Lovren More Error Prone Than The Entire Saints Squad Put Together !!!
at 15:20:27

Someone might have already posted this elsewhere but two out of ten of the Guardian's 'unsung heroes' are Fonte and Bertrand who could show Lovren a thing or too about behaving with class, Jose for how he stepped up to the captaincy when everyone was off and Ryan for how he has gone out on loan and shown Chelski what they are missing:

This definitely has banana skin written all over it, but I hope the crowd stay behind the team even if we do struggle to break them down or dare I say it go a goal behind. We have to keep in mind that even if we lose we will STILL be third thanks to our awesome goal difference now (how good might that be come the end of the season if we end level on points with a few other teams around us!). Obviously no one likes to see us lose but 3rd after 9 games on 16 points is still a pretty good place to be.

Saints At Tottenham Hotspur The Verdict
at 12:00:49

Disappointing result but that fact that we are all disappointed at losing away to Spurs is testament to just how much we have achieved in the last 5 years-October 2009 we were playing in league one! It's great that we have set such high standards and the run was always going to come to an end at some point. Hopefully we can now grab a hatful of goals at home to Sunderland and Stoke. Very exciting times.
