The Scottish issue has shown once again what a weak leader Labour has in Ed Milliband. Not only was his presence almost invisible in that his apparent support for greater powers for Scotland coincided to such a degree with those of Cameron and Clegg, but he has failed completely to see the trap that he has now fallen into. The English parliament for the English is now the Tory battle cry. This of course would mean that the Scottish representatives in Parliament would not be able to vote on English laws.As very few of those Scottish representatives are conservatives, Labour would lose out to the extent that even with a majority they would find it difficult to govern ,lacking the Scottish Labour vote on major issues. The fact also that it was Gordon Brown that made the biggest impact in Scotland shows what little impact Milliband had. The latest opinion polls in the Times today shows Labour(36%) leading the Tories (31%).however Cameron is the public's most trusted leader with 22% with only 16% supporting Milliband. Again his support for the Barnett formula brings him into direct conflict with his Welsh Labour MPs. If there is to be any hope of a change from Tory rule at the next elections Milliband must be replaced, and must be replaced now.
Totally agree. The Labour Party made a huge mistake in not voting his brother in. The trade union vote saw to that unfortunately.
Image plays a huge part in politics, much more than it should. Milliband, obviously a highly intelligent man does not have the gravitas to lead our nation. Harsh ss it sounds, his basal problem does him no favours. I haven't even got onto policies!!!
However, with the GE coming around fast, I think it is too late to replace him. It would show the electorate that their choice was wrong and they would be resorting to panic measures.
Think the Tories will get in again next year and as a majority. If they don't act quickly on the English parliament / devolution, watch Nige stealing a few votes.

From what I remember, the Tories need about 40% of the vote to get a majority. The LibDems vetoed the boundary changes the Tories wanted to introduce to make getting a majority easier for them. Labour can command a majority on about 36% the way the boundaries are currently drawn. I can't see the Tories getting a majority. I'm not convinced Labour will either. Another hung parliament, maybe. And Cameron has already boxed himself into a corner by insisting that he's no intention of entering into another coalition. Interesting times.
Labour has what the unions wanted; a union puppet.
Red Ed was behind his brother in every single round of voting. MPs, members ALL wanted Dave.
Final round, once Ed Balls withdrew, the union block votes swung to Red Ed. That was the single reason he "won" that election. Sums his character up that he was prepared to stab his own brother in the back to gain "power". Entirely summed up by the bacon sandwich incident. Ignore the fact he's, you know, Jewish and shouldn't be eating pork products, the whole "look at me, I eat like the common plebs, almost" was cringeworthy.
Labour will only be a credible party once they actually grasp unions aren't as relevant as they used to be. Society and the work environment has moved on since the old days of children working down t'mill.

And maybe, just maybe they remove clueless clowns like Ed Balls from the front benches. The bloke has had more positions than a cheap brass, yet they keep him there because he'll cause trouble from the back benches.
Could you imagine the 2 Ed's running the country? I'd call them the 2 Ronnies, but messrs Barker and Corbett were (and still are) funny!
Yah Millband =Labour therefore for the working man.. Or ED balls, another champion of the oppressed and his lovely partner/wife/concubine Yvette-our next home sec.. Yeah ..
On the other hand vote GREEN, but it would mean getting to games on foot ,horse, bike or even canal, even by glider as it wont use any energy

How does the glider get up there in the first place?

I bet they were a real wow with the girls in their college days.
I'm not one for judging politicians by their looks since I think that leads to a bunch of vacuous airheads (of both genders), but I have to say, there is something about Ed which just makes me want to slap him (Dave also for that matter). There isn't a chin between the lot of them.

You may not want to, but you have just done so and so will millions of others.
That's why a leader must have the full package and that includes looks, appearance, charm etc. that's modern politics for you.

yes, but it's the particular combination that is so appalling isn't it. In Ed's case, he's not good looking obviously, but he's far from being the most unattractive labour leader in my lifetime and yet I'm not sure I would have wanted to slap Foot, or Wilson, or even Brown (all of whom looked worse). It's the package with Ed that's so awful.

Yes indeed. I can't imagine Milliband representing the UK on the world stage with any real authority.
David in the other hand.
I was critical of Brown. Got the job by some sort if pact and didn't cover himself in glory.
Foot never made it to PM thank the lord.
Wilson, just before the time where image played such an important part IMO.
David Milliband would have been the perfect choice for Labour I'd say.

The gulf between the others you've listed and Michael Foot is cavernous, in my opinion. He used to get flak for his appearance: the absent-minded Professor. That was the attraction for me; the man was possessed of an obvious intellect. He had a mind, and whether you agreed with him or not, he was always interesting to listen to and in the often stale world of Westminster he stood out for being fresh and original.
I'm no Labour supporter but I had a lot of time for Michael Foot. As I believe I mentioned here before I corresponded with him for a while, many years ago, when I was making enquiries about the fall of the Labour administration in 1931. He was kind enough to take the time to go into great depth with me, giving priceless personal insight into a largely forgotten past.
I found him to be a warm, kindly, fascinating man. He was genuine. I can think of no higher, or rarer, accolade for a politician.
An idea isn't responsible for those who believe in it.

I completely agree. Michael Foot was a giant among politicians and whether you agreed with him or not he puts today's political pygmies to shame.

I'd disagree. Seemed a decent enough guy, but if he was a great as claimed, he'd surely have known that 1983 Labour manifesto would make the party utterly unelectable. Certainly wasn't in touch with the feelings of the populace if he believed Britain would go for naked socialism.

He wasn't in control of his party in 1983. Early 80s Labour was run by the hard left and the way the party's constitution worked at the time meant that its leader was not able to unilaterally decide what was and wasn't party policy.
