Shelvey in the AM role 23:40 - Dec 20 with 2794 views | C_jack | What did we think of this today? in comparison to Jonjo's performances as a deeper midfielder. I didn't watch the game live, but watching MOTD now it's a bloody delight to see him getting shots off and pulling strings, while playing with a huge smile at the same time.

Shelvey in the AM role on 23:53 - Dec 20 with 2097 views | NeathJack | It's by far his best position. He can be a liability on times in the DCM role due to switching off and sloppy passes but as an AM he has the freedom to express himself and has an eye for goal. I'd like to see him push Gylfi for the starting spot.

Really? Are you honestly saying that Gylfi and Shelvey are even close in terms of quality? Miles apart, mate.
Shelvey in the AM role on 00:05 - Dec 21 with 2045 views | BobJack | For me Leon / ki defensive mid. Jonjo or Siggy attacking mids. Ki and Jonjo have to be flexible given our squad. They are both doing find for us. Jonjo gets too much stick at times, especially when he is not played in his best position. In fairness he just gets on with it.

It's not a mile, let alone 'miles' From what I've seen, we didn't miss Siggy at all today. Food for thought.

No, we didn't miss him today. We didn't miss Bony either. We're still much better with both in the side though. Gylfi is by quite some distance our best attacking midfielder. | | | | Login to get fewer ads
Shelvey in the AM role on 00:20 - Dec 21 with 1995 views | Dyfnant | Some posters need to remember we were playing an out of form team, missings numerous 1st choices. There aren't any excuses I want to hear for JJS strolling around the pitch in the Spurs match.

Arguably no less of a performance than Siggy has had against out of form teams this season, Leicester and QPR being examples.

Thought it was Jonjo's best performance of the season.
Shelvey in the AM role on 08:24 - Dec 21 with 1706 views | Dr_Winston | There is very little difference in terms of ability between Sigurdsson and Shelvey. Shelvey is arguably even more naturally gifted. There is however a yawning chasm in terms of mental application, common sense and consistency, which is what makes the difference.

I really like Shelvey and want him in the team. At Gylfi's expense though ? Never

Yep - he's still young though. Massive natural talent. I really hope we stick with him and bring him on. I've heard we'll let him go in January if a decent offer comes in. Bloody shame if that happens.

Agreed - you can add fitness & work rate
Shelvey in the AM role on 09:26 - Dec 21 with 1575 views | Brynmill_Jack | JJS is only ever going to be suited to the AM or at a push the box to box role . If he makes a mistake further up the pitch the less likely we are going to be punished for it.

They both stem from mental application. It's almost as if parts of the game come too easily to him so he doesn't work as hard as he could do. If he had his head screwed on and applied himself as much as Sigurdsson apparently does then he'd be some player.

Shelvey in the AM role on 09:47 - Dec 21 with 1505 views | Neath_Jack | Different players. Gylfi is the traditional number 10, sitting just off the main striker. Jonjo is an attacking midfielder, there is a difference. Both hugely talented.

Shelvey in the AM role on 09:51 - Dec 21 with 1497 views | Daggyjack | Quite surprised by the lack of JJS slating that usually accompanies a thread involving him...no wait, he set up a goal, hit the post and we won... In all seriousness, Shelvey is more suited to the AM role Tha a DM role and its good to have him and Siggy vying for that position with Ki and Leon filling the DM roles. For me, Siggy plays before JJS although I think JJS is also extremely talented. It's good to have two AM's who aren't afraid to shoot as well. We seem to have a strong squad from Midfield forwards, it's just the full back position that needs strengthening long term IMO.

He's still young but he doesn't seem to be progressing the way most of us would like. The talent is undoubtedly there but I can see him moving on which is a shame - very frustrating

Shelvey in the AM role on 10:21 - Dec 21 with 1437 views | 1973scott | Shelvs, is A deep-lying playmaker, he often is a holding midfielder who specialises in ball skills such as passing, rather than defensive skills like tackling. When he has the ball he will often attempt longer or more complex passes than other holding players. He will hit a pass long to a centre-forward or winger; or pass short to a teammate in the hole, the area between the opponents' defenders and midfielders. That is his role, although capable of making tackles, his focus is on keeping the ball moving, occasionally raking long passes out to the flanks to change the angle of attack. As An attacking midfielder his position is between central midfield and bony, and who has a primarily offensive role. Watch his movement, yesterday, he may be divided into left, right and central attacking midfield roles. In this role he is a playmaker. Yesterday he created good shooting opportunities by making crosses, through balls and headed knockdowns to teammates. He was also setting up shooting opportunities for himself by dribbling, or performing a give-and-go with a teammate. He was making runs into the opponents' penalty area in order to shoot from another teammate's pass, which suits his skill set What about the "false10 or central winger", are usually traditional wingers who are told to play in the centre of the pitch, and their natural way of playing makes them drift wide. GM has a nice blend of players in the squad who can play modern football. [Post edited 21 Dec 2014 10:25]
