Amazing dogs, I've had 2.... Extremely intelligent but you have to train them or they get bored easily. You have to exersize their monds. they do need a lot of walking too because thay are very energetic...

A mate of mine had a few over the years, he loved them; but and it's a BIG but they need lots of exercise. Loads of it. They're not a small dog and have energy to burn, as befits an animal bred for a function, so unless you have the time to devote then I'd think about another breed. They can be quite destructive if they're bored. |  |

The Doberman was initially bred as guard dogs, therefore they must have a certain amount of boldness and aggression in their general make up.
Although I would guess that over time a lot of that has been bred out of them. Having said that, there is always a certain amount of their inbred genes that will be retained, and may resurface given the right conditions.
I would ask you what you want in a dog, do you really need this type of dog ? as others have said they can make very loving pets, but they can also be very aggressive, especially to people they are not familiar with. And they possess the strength, jaw power and teeth to inflict severe, if not fatal injuries.
Have real hard think before going for this breed, if you must, then be sure to take a look at the Dam (mother) at the very least, ideally the Sire (father) as well.
There are plenty of other less aggressive dog breeds out there, and personally I would suggest you have a think about one of them. |  |

What a complete load of rubbish, it's people like you who make a problem with breeds like this when there isn't one!!!
Every dog can be aggressive if it is not socialised properly, the only problem is the thugs/idiots who want an aggressive dog.... They would get a dobbie, pitbull, rottie or staff because they have got the power to cause damage if they trained the dog in that way.
I have been around dogs all my life and these breeds don't bite the most and they aren't the most aggressive.... The only problem is that if they do ever bite - you will hear about it! | | | |

Most were bold as brass, one was shaking with fright but the last one sat and looked around. He didn't yap, he didn't cause trouble but still looked confident. He was fabulous right up to the moment he died.

We had one years ago, brilliant dogs,, extremely gentle, intelligent and loyal..
We had to re home ours as our son developed an allergy. It was awful experience but it was meant to be because she saved the family that we gave her to from dying in a house fire, she woke them and led them to safety.
I had a rottie many years later and they are just the same, as are boxers and labs
Lost count of the times our 2 year old son got in her basket with her and they went to sleep, under our supervision of course.

If the pups are pedigree, look out for two excellent lines. 'Tavey' are very intelligent (Iceberg of Tavey is a legend) and 'Tumlow' (a very big, strong line. If you are after a dog, Tumlow tend to produce strong, square muzzled dogs instead of pointy, more feminine noses). [Post edited 10 Feb 2015 21:13]

The OP says it's also for his daughter, I don't know how old she is, is she.capable of training such a dog, is she physicaly strong enough to hold it back on it's lead if it decided it wanted to attack another dog, or even a person when out walking, all this should be taken into consideration before purchase.

My brother is a very successful dog trainer, trains all kinds of dogs from basic abediance, search and rescue, food refusal, personal protection and also tracking so I know a lot about dogs, I also know that there are not bad dogs.... There are bad owners!!
For the OP, if you want a doberman, get one. You will not be dissapointed as long as you have the time and effort the breed deserves. | | | |

So maybe your brother should be giving the advise and not you.
I'm also a successful dog trainer, still am and have been for many years.... So I'm not spouting bollox... I'm passing on what I feel is good advise.
But you crack on mate......go ahead and advise the OP to purchase a Doberman as a pet for his daughter unknowing how it will suit their circumstances.
As I said prior a little knowledge is a dangerous thing......a large dog with the capability to inflict severe injuries or in extreme cases kill, is even more dangerous.
Mix the both together and you have a recipe for disaster. | |

Fantastic dogs, I've had 4 of them, no problem at all with them, my maxy is feeling his age now though arthritis is taking a hold, sad to see in such an active dog, but after lying down for while he gets up limping, booked him in to see the vet on Thursday, he's nearly 11 now which is a good age for Dobes, his temperament is superb.
My advice before buying would be to check the pedigree and ask loads of questions about temperament and if you can get to see both parents and make a judgement on them all the better, we paid £650 for Max and we virtually had pick of the litter, saw and spent time with both parents both had superb temperaments and it became an easy decision to buy from the owner.
