Any carpenters/kitchen fitters on here? 12:43 - Nov 10 with 3117 viewsJulieF

My elderly mum has bought a standalone kitchen larder cupboard made by Cotswold Furniture. It's a big piece off furniture, a bit like a big oak wardrobe, but with lots of shelves and drawers inside, including one fixed shelf that is either marble or granite. She's planned where it will go in the kitchen, and it will fit perfectly.

Unfortunately though, it can't get into the kitchen! It can't be manouevred through the hallway in her Victorian terrace as it can't get past the turn at the bottom of the stairs. If it comes through the back door it would have to be on its side, and then there's not enough ceiling height to get it upright.

The delivery men suggested we take it round the back, and then get a carpenter to disassemble and reassemble it. But the couple of carpenters we've rung don't seem interested.

Any helpful suggestions please... it's currently stuck in the narrow hallway, which is really not very convenient!

(Mum's in Mumbles btw)

Probably assembled Ikea style so you shouldn’t need a carpenter.

Ok may be way off beam here and you may have already tried

If you can get it in the kitchen on its side, I can understand there would not be the ceiling clearance to rotate it upright sideways because of its width.

Assuming its depth is significantly smaller than its width, then this may work as it should require less ceiling clearance, but you will need the room to manipulate it on the kitchen floor

- bring in on its side through kitchen door

- rotate on the kitchen floor so it’s doors are facing down on the floor and its feet / base are facing the spot it is to go in and are the depth of the base away from its designated spot

- Get hands under the top of the doors and ease it backwards up onto its feet and into its desired position

Of course a pain to try if you find you still don’t have the ceiling clearance to rotate it back to front either, but I think if the ceiling is as high as the external diagonal measurement of one side of the cupboard (from say the left side back floor point - to the left side front top corner) then this should work.

(alternatively you could check if it will work using trigonometry or you could get some boxes from the co-op and make a full sized model :))

Otherwise it really depends if it is just screwed together in which case it should not be hard for anyone to dissemble and reassemble in situ. If it is glued and dowelled (as a significant piece of furniture like that may well be) then it may be much more difficult and may damage the finish.

Good luck

You said it’s made by Cotswold Furniture, but where did she buy it from? Do they have a list of tradesmen they could recommend? If you can’t manoeuvre it in I would give Cotswold Furniture a ring and ask them what exactly needs to be done to dismantle it so it can be rebuilt in the kitchen.
Depending on the build complexity, you may be better off trying to find a joiner as opposed to a carpenter.
