Toby Jones simply brilliant as the guy instrumental in exposing this national scandal which saw good people made redundant ,homeless and life savings swallowed by a Post Office so inept and arrogant it’s hard to contemplate.
People died because of this

The first cases were 'settled' in 2019, the legal process has rumbled on slowly. This is a systemic failure going over several governments and 20 years. No government can override the legal system for obvious reasons.
If we are looking for a politician to blame them Ed Davey is your man, he had several cases raised with him when he had overall responsibility and dismissed them out of hand. Sunak is responding in the same way as any PM would given the circumstances today.

It will be good if these sub postmasters receive financial compensation but it will never ever compensate the victims or indeed their families of the shame or stigma of these convictions and allegations of wrong doing within their communities & this will be the case for the next few generations we all know how people gossip & especially in these close knit villages…
The amount of alleged victims of this scandal does not even take into account the many thousands of sub postmasters who covered up their financial losses with their own savings to avoid prosecution & then closed up shop..
But the Post Office are not alone in ripping people off in the UK just think of especially these energy companies who help themselves to our money via direct debit for supposed energy use.. | | | |

Totally agree. The post office ruined peoples lives, they bankrupted them and those who benefitted financially should have to ay back what they gained AND put money into restitution too. If they have to sell their homes then so be it, why should they get away with it when they put families out on the streets. | | | |

Maybe not back in the mists of time but today? Politics has always had corruption becaise there has always been corruption everywhere you look.
Not ften mentioned is the split Bevan caused in the Labour party in thr 50's, more recently we had Corbynites versus Blairites but back then it was the Bevanies versus the Gaitskillites.

Interesting article here saying that Geoff Mulgan sent Tony Blair a memo in 1998 warning of flaws in Horizon and suggesting he get the Post Office to cancel it.

The Horizon software at the centre of the Post Office scandal was originally designed to save money and reduce fraud in connection with benefits and pension payments.
Horizon was a joint venture between the Post Office, the Benefits Agency (DWP) and ICL, a subsidiary of Fujitsu.
The intention was to create a swipe card system for benefits and pensions to be paid out at Post Offices, replacing paper payment books.
This project began in 1996, but by 1999 the Benefits agency had lost all faith in the system ever working and pulled out, leaving the taxpayer with a massive £700 million bill with nothing to show at the end of it.
In desperation the government repurposed the project to allow electronic bookkeeping to replace paper accounts at post offices.
The Benefits Agency pulling out of the Horizon project had already warned the government that there were major faults and flaws in the Fujitsu system - the result of that is now playing out in the media, the courts and a public inquiry. | |
