Best guess is historically speaking most jobs were incredibly physical and labour intensive and women probably didn’t want to do the jobs and weren’t generally as physically able to do it as men (biological fact).

The main purpose of employment in a capitalist market driven economy like ours, is for employees to make as much money for the employee as possible, then they can earn money to buy the products that these companies employ workers to make. From the employers side they don't care who they are as long as they are reliable, work hard and do long hours.If women have a family they need to take care of, or have time off, that's not their problem,it's just business they just want value from the employee and men offer better value.
