What's MCE got to do with the Welsh News?

When they played it at the Grand Dave Hill ran around throwing bog rolls into the audience.

The ugliest band in British chart history.

Some stonking tunes though.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

Always thought Slade was a massive British band but always thought it was odd where they were placed on this bill. Would never have expected BOC to be more popular, in this country at least, and even Whitesnake in '81 were nowhere near as huge I wouldn't have thought.

Not the two guys pictured though Dave Hill & Don Powell.

The songwriters were Noddy Holder & Dave Lea

Slade were once described as the missing link between The Beatles & Oasis and it's hard to argue with that.

This was my first ever proper gig, i was and still am a big ac/dc fan. We went up on the train on the friday, and came back on the sunday evening, no tent or sleeping bag haha, and slept? under the large tyre bridge that cross,s the track. Blackfoot were brill, i can remember lying under a lorry trailer listening to slade as it was raining, not a fan of theirs so to speak, but noddys voice was huge. Noddys autobiography is a really good read tho. Remember whitesnake going down a storm, and ac/dc, well i was in a state of amazement for two weeks after lol.

I'm to young for that one, it was ten years or so after that that my gig days began. Just thought it was a slightly odd line-up, or at least where Slade were on it.

Cool site with review of that gig here:

Played the Patti back in the day, skinhead moonstomp!

The whole skinhead thing was their manager's idea and pure image.

I was there and the place only came to life when Slade took the stage. They were just starting to re-establish themselves after a few years out of favour ..... I think it was Reading the year before that put them back in the spotlight.

When they (or their roadies) started chucking bog rolls into the crowd, the place went mental and the air was just full of bottles and crap and we just stood there cowering with our heads covered for ages. Always been a great live band but never seen them without Noddy.

There's a story going round that Noddy Holder was very nearly the lead singer of Led Zeppelin. That would have been interesting.

I think it went around that AC/DC looked at him after Bon Scott too. Would've been a perfect match seeing as what they turned into with Brian Johnson.
