Mel Gibson's new film Hacksaw Ridge, based on Herndon's biography of Desmond Doss, The Unlikeliest Hero, looks to be the best thing he's been involved with for years (the only thing?)
The book itself has been out of print for years but looks certain to be reissued when the film is released. Pick up a copy if you get chance, it's very good.
An idea isn't responsible for those who believe in it.
