well done young Tosh and Garry 12:41 - Oct 1 with 2930 views | vetchonian | Whilst Potter (quite rightly) is receiving plaudits for what he is doing with this young side we should also look to thank the coaches of the U23s who have had so much to do with the development of our youngsters. ( I wont take the credit for this T2c/The Res mentioned this in another but feel it warrants its own thread. Interestingly all 3 of Saturday goals scored by products of the U23s too SO thank you guys long may it continue

They all play for each other, but unfortunately their team has been decimated now. It is going to be a struggle for them to get decent results.

Hopefully the acadamy should have a "conveyor" belt of talent coming up from the next agegroup?

But that is also a problem, the U23s are stealing down to 16 year olds, so all the lower teams are also suffering. The U18s got stuffed 6:1 by Boro in their cup match. The U23s were beaten 4:1 by Man C. [Post edited 1 Oct 2018 12:57]

Whereas the optimistic view of this sees an opportunity for youngsters to grow, develop and step up. Whilst nothing is guaranteed even a small opportunity is better than no opportunity.

A club doesn't exist to have a successful academy team. It's a means to an end. Football won't stand still and we'll have to keep going, the it is what it is.

so does this mean that we havent the same quality of players coming behind this crop which have just moved into the first team? Are these recent defeats just a blip or is there a void behind this batch of talented guys?

The under 23's wasn't a success overnight. It took years in the making with coaching youngsters or bringing them in from other clubs.

Well we have just robbed the U23s of most of their best players, plus we have also let some go like Kenji, who may not have been Prem standard but did a good job for the U23s. So now all the youngsters are having to step up a level and it will take them a while to get used to extra pace and strength of the next level. I think one of their big problems is a lack of goal scorers. [Post edited 1 Oct 2018 15:55]

There is no particular void of talent, it's just hard to maintain success when the best half of each team moves up all at once. Unless you're a big academy registering thousands of u16s (and signing some for 6 and 7 figures) each class is going to feature only a few standouts, not a full 11. Hard to say yet if Jordon Garrick and Simon Paulet can step into the shoes of Dan James and George Byers, but Brandon Cooper looks like he's going to be on Rodon's heels in twelve months time. Aaron Lewis is a quality footballer. Jack Evans is a big miss for the team. Ryan Bevan and Ali Al-Hamadi in the u18s are worth watching out for. As is Jacob Jones.

Liam Cullen is proving a big disappointment at u23s level. Phenomenal finisher with the u18s (since he was 15), but can't get close to that now. Works as hard as anyone, hopefully he finds that touch again.

This It's not about winning games to massage pushy parent's egos, it's for stretching and challenging the 4 strongest players so they develop quickly enough to push on top compete for first team places

And parents/ kids themselves will look when offered a chance at our academy and think "Mmm. I/ my son may get a chance to breakthrough and play pro football here. Chelsea/ whoever just sign 600 kids and hope and pray one makes it." I only see positives with the babes becoming boys and now men. They'll always be those who aren't quite good enough anyway but it was worth a punt for a club our size. As once said (Sir Matt Busby I think?) "If they're good enough, they're old enough."
| If you wake up breathing, thats a good start to your day and you'll make many thousands of people envious. |

Nothing demoralises kids more than being thrashed week in and week out. As to the 4 strongest players, they will have difficulty showing just how good they are with a really gash side supporting their efforts. It took quite a while to build the teams up to play as a team and not just as individuals running around the pitch doing their own thing. It will probably take at least half a season for those teams to get back to where they were before they all got "promoted". They may not do so without some fresh blood to boost their scoring chances though.

Sorry we'll have to agree to disagree. Although I think the whole academy system is morally bankrupt
