Major injury blow plus Williams puts his squad on notice 10th Apr 2024 11:30
The Swans will host Stoke City at the Swansea.com this evening (8pm) and many of those attending have little faith in the noise and talk we continue to hear from the club. However, this is a day for supporting the team and getting behind the players who wear our clubs shirt on the pitch. 2

Nice article but seeing that some (all?) players are being told to prove themselves he can’t then drop them. I’m talking about Grimes here more than anyone. There’s nothing more I’d like to see than his backside on the bench but it’s not going to happen surely?

Union.
It should have happened way earlier
I was a lone voice outlining my distain for this shockingly overrated player .
Not a bad player but hardly one deserving of the former adulation he had.
It’s past tense now .
He is the first that should go so we get reset ourselves

I'm finding all this criticism about Grimes baffling to say the least.
Yes our problem primarily is the midfield and he and Fulton don't complement each other. Midfield was far better balanced when Joe played alongside him.
My only criticism of Grimes is that he is not vocal enough for my liking particularly when we concede.
He counteracts this by leading by example with his effort and commitment to the team.
Easy to say bench him but who would replace him?.
First name on the team sheet for me.

Of course opinions that differ are welcome, yours especially.
He splits the fanbase like a certain manager used to.

Well stated.
The main reason I have not renewed my season ticket next season is not the poor standard of football but the sheer frustration of being surrounded by thousands of people who just do understand the sport they are watching (and then have to come on here and Facebook etc and repeat their load of drivel.) I have a lifetime of experience in the sport at every level and every position - playing/ managing/ refereeing/scouting/ coaching/directing etc. There is not the slightest doubt in my mind Grimes is a first-class professional and the standout individual in this squad. "Not vocal enough? - I assure you from experience that a filthy look or a shake of the head is far more effective that any degree of volume. Shouting at team mates is 'playing to the crowd,' which obviously would go down well at the Swansea.com.

It’s his contributions of late for me that mean he needs a rest. It won’t happen I know, but it can’t go on.

Yes agree.
Good points made.
By vocal I don't mean openly criticising a player. Some players respond to this most don't.
By vocal I mean in a number of ways words of encouragement being just one.
Back on track though - I believe Matt Grimes is an excellent captain, a very consistent player and a key member of our team.

I gave my season ticket up years ago because of a family health issue. But I can sympathise with your reasoning, there were a few blokes sat behind me for years who would talk and complain through every match. 🤦‍♂️

His physical fitness is phenomenal. He plays every single minute and has barely missed a game in six years. But then there must be some mental fatigue in there. To keep that going for so long day in day out there must be an element of mental burnout. I think every player needs a rest sometimes.

Leading by exampe would be great if he was leading us forwards but ll to often he's taking us sideways and backwards.

If he put more effort and commitmnt inot taking us into attack instead of constantly taking the easy, safe options then maybe we wouldn't be in such a bad position? We are lucky that there are several teams even worse than us.

Grimes isn't a captain, he is not a driving force. nhe is the common denominator in 4 years or more of having a poor midfield. he is the almost ever present.

Remember these words when Grimes is yet again dropping in between our centre backs and inviting pressure onto us. Re,ember these words when we are in attack but Grimes turns backwards to retain possession because he doesn't like 50/50 passes.

Lets just hope the player we have seen glimpses of turns up tonight and Ill be happiest poster on here if that Grimes leads us to a win but, I won't hold my breath.

In my opinion Grimes is a quality player, but I suppose my quibble arises from a certain frustration that he has not kicked on as much as I expected after leaving Exeter. In that team, which I saw a lot at that time, Matty pushed forward more, and was a real goal threat with long-range shots from open play and free kicks. Nowadays, he plays too many balls sideways or backwards for my liking, and is not scoring as many goals as I think he should. Is it partly about confidence? Why as an experienced dead ball specialist he let Cullen miss that pen a few weeks ago I still don't know.

For those who think that our clear out should start with Grimes.

Do you seriously think that those responsible for recruiting players at our club are capable of replacing him with a better player?

The steady decline of our club is down to players moving on and their replacement being inferior. There will be the occasional success of course, but the overwhelming problem is that the next player is poorer than the one before.

Swansea are underperforming apart from one game they magically were able to find an extra gear for. They were happy with themselves and partied long and hard. Grimes is the captain and he needs to demand the same standards as the Cardiff game. The players have put their feet up on his watch. It does not matter how you do it as long as it works. The last few games have seen standards drop. Grimes is culpable. He is Swansea best player and should consider standing down as captain. Darling looks the best bet.

Anyone remember Shelvey getting pelters for shouting at everyone too much when he was captain?

You can’t win either way.

Shelvey was a lose cannon who imploded when called out by a supporter at Oxford for lack of effort. He was rightly moved on very quickly after that. You just can't offer to fight with a supporter in the car park.

You are talking about he "process" not the "outcome".

How many dull uninspired performances do you want to see before significant changes are made?

The team were 'up' for Cardiff and have not turned up for other vital games such than Swansea are close to sleep walking to relegation. It happened under Carlos.

Williams and Grimes are the main drivers and it is not working. Grimes is accountable for not getting is players firing on all cylinders. People like Klopp do it every match. Swansea are too nice and lack an edge.

Well,it shouldn’t
A captain leads.
Adduce sone evidence as to how Grimes actually does this .
Captaining by looks.? Nah.
He represents the players. Are they happy with tactics etc? It’s his job to see the coach .
He is directly responsible for attitudes on the pitch
Don’t be baffled by the thousands who see zero passion in front of them.
He is well paid and doesn’t need cuddles to get by
This is a tough business

Grimes, man of the match. Outside of Leicester & Leeds, one of the best midfielders in the championship.
In my humble opinion.

I like Grimes but the balance in midfield is not there. I believe that Joe was the replacement for Downes but due to injuries he hasn't played enough.

Walsh has also been injured so managers have been forced into a Grimes and Fulton combination which in my opinion does not work well enough if we are looking to push on

Big decisions needed regarding central midfield in my view.

Agree. Fulton has been a decent servant.
He is now not first choice, but with our injury loving midfield, needs must.

Grimes clear MOM on Sky. Quality performance.
I’m not a lover of him as captain, but you can’t ask more of one, after a few terrible performances, he’s the one who stands up and has the man of match game for his teammates to see. Well done lad
