Jonjo - I Thought It Was Going Over
Sunday, 27th Apr 2014 01:54

Jonjo Shelvey scored what could probably be the Swans goal of the season against Aston Villa at the Liberty but just about missed the moment when the ball hit the back of the net after he thought his effort from inside the centre circle was going over.

Shelvey caught out Brad Guzan in the Villa goal to score the great strike which surely will be right at the top of the reckoning for goal of the season when the Swans celebrate the season with the end of season awards dinner on May 7.

Having submitted the short list to the voted for on the night, Shelvey added his effort to that this afternoon with his wonder strike that put the Swans back ahead on an afternoon in which they finally secured their Premier League status for another season.

One of Michael Laudrup's signings from last summer, Shelvey has chipped in with some vital goals from midfield already this season but none was as eye catching as the one this afternoon which turned momentum back to the Swans.

But the midfielder revealed afterwards that he did not think he had hit the target and he told the official site "I thought it was going over at first, so I started walking away," he said. "But luckily it dropped over the keeper's head and went in.

"I had a quick look before I hit it to see if there were any options, but I caught it nice and it was a great strike.

"The goal came at a crucial point because they had started to get a foothold in the game, and we needed it to give us the lead again before the break.

"It's been a tough season with all the European games and the travelling, but it was important that we got these three points and it means a lot.

"We have put in some good performances at home, but haven't had the rub of the green.
"However, we are not a team to sit back and be happy. we want six points from the last two games and hopefully we can do that."
