Ki Is Like Another New Signing

The news yesterday that Ki Sung-Yeung signed a new four year contract at the Swans was music to the ears of many and like another new signing for the Swans this summer after he appeared to be on his way out of the club just twelve months ago.

Ki was not wanted by then manager Michael Laudrup and ended up for most of the season on loan at Sunderland with the Swans missing the chance to bring him back to cover injuries at the turn of the year.

Much was written about that at the time and it definitely was a missed chance for the Swans but one that did not come back to haunt them as a change in manager and a step up of form towards the end of the season saw them end comfortably in mid table after a season that never lived up to the expectations set at the beginning of it.

At the time the manager was happy to sell the player but it was the club that insisted on a loan deal fearing - as many did - that last season would have been Laudrup's last at the club anyway whatever happened. And that insistence was proven to be right and now the midfielder sits as the owner of a brand new four year contract to stay at the club.

It was Ki who scored the first Premier League goal of the season in our surprise 2-1 opening day win at Old Trafford and he will retain his place tomorrow for the third successive league game as he stands in for the injured Leon Britton but also does his cause no harm with two good displays to date.

Add all of these things together and you have one happy midfielder staying at the Liberty “I’m very pleased,” he said "This is what I have wanted to do - my first option was always to renew with Swansea.

“I am very pleased with all of the players and staff at the club, so I am very happy to sign a new contract.

“I want to sacrifice myself for the team and, as always, do as much as I can to help this team improve. I will be giving 100 per cent, and I am looking forward to continuing my work with the club.”

At the end of last season midfield was always a key area in which the Swans would be wanting to strengthen and whilst Ki was already on our books bringing him in and extending his stay has the same net effect as a new signing although this time we have someone who was always going to settle back in quicker than a new player would do.

Definitely another good signing for us in what is turning out to be a very good transfer window!
