Saints Still IN Talks Over Elia
Thursday, 25th Jun 2015 11:33 by Nick Illingsworth

Although Saints have declined to excersise the option to purchase Eljero Elia from Werder Bremen, The German club have confirmed talks are still ongoing.

Eljero Elia initially impressed in his appearances for Saints, his two goals at Newcastle being the highlight, however his impact was not so great in his final couple of months at St Mary's although in fairness to the Dutchman he was not helped by Saints going through their worst patch of the season and some of his team mates not exactly being on fire either.

All thingsbeing equal though Ronald Koeman declined the clause to buy Elia for £5.5 million, however the technical manager of Werder Bremen Rouven Schroder has confirmed that talks between the two clubs are ongoing with reports indicating that the Germans will accept a lower fee.

With Saints due to play Werder Bremen in Salzburg in two weeks time it will be interesting to see if Elia will be playing for Saints or against them.

My opinion is that Elia could represent a good buy at the right price and with the squad needing to be strengthened if we could get him for around £3 million it could be a good investment.

He rarely got a chance to shine after Christmas, sitting on the bench for 75 mins each game.

Really don't think Elia has the quality. He had enough opportunities to show what he could do but for me did not carry enough of a threat to the opposition. He was on the bench more towards the end as he didnt impress enough when he started games. Djuricic looked very promising, would love to see him at St Marys, but don't rate Elia.

I think he'll add depth to the squad and maybe provide other options. Whether he'll be match-winner the jury's still out for me.

He is quite an average player and at his age he isn’t likely to get much better.

Đuričić would be a much better option although he might cost a few more pennies.

If we lose Clyne and Morgan then I can’t help but feel we will need a bit of a "Marquee" signing to keep the profile of the club up. We are becoming a stepping stone

Going against some of the earlier comments, I'd rather have Elia than Djuricic. I didn't really see anything in Djuricic in the games I saw, but maybe I missed the ones where he played well. Elia started well and won the game for us at Newcastle. Having said that I suspect he needs games and needs to be loved, and being a squad player for us, sitting on the bench, probably isn't the best thing for him
