Watford Striker Stays Put

I think it is probably fair to say that even if we had an interest in Troy Deeney the moment we secured the capture of Eder earlier in the week then that interest was effectively ended.

However, if there was any doubt left in people's minds, the future of the player was secured today when he signed a new five-year deal with Watford which also ended the interest of Everton, Aston Villa and Newcastle which had been reported by various newspapers.

Deeney - who has scored more than 20 goals for the Hornets in each of the past three seasons was always going to be hot property at one stage but he has clearly decided that having scored the goals that helped Watford reach the Premier League he wants the chance to prove himself at this level with the same club.

As with many of the rumours that went around with us this summer being linked I am not sure that there was every really any mileage in this. Even before the capture of Eder we had Gomis on the books who was secure here for another season and I would imagine that a deciding factor for Deeney staying at Watford is the guarantee that he will get more first team football there.

He certainly wouldn't get as much at Swansea so for him it is the right decision and for us - well, we weren't really in there anyway were we?
