Wednesday night saw a couple of pre-season shocks with both Newcastle and Sunderland beaten by lower league opposition but Leicester continued their unbeaten pre-season with a second win in 24 hours.

Rotherham 1 Leicester City 2

Leicester City continued their unbeaten pre-season with a victory against Rotherham United at the New York Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Just 24 hours after the 2-1 win over Burton Albion, the Foxes beat Steve Evans’ side by the same scoreline thanks to two goals in the second half.

It was Riyad Mahrez who broke the deadlock, dispatching a fine effort from range, before David Nugent doubled City’s advantage 16 minutes later.

The Millers found the back of the net on 80 minutes through Grant Ward, but there would be no comeback for the hosts as the Foxes defended well late-on for their third win in four pre-season friendly fixtures.

Claudio Ranieri: “I’m happy, we played against a good team. For us it was an improvement. It was another 90 minutes for the other 11 players. We played some good football, scored two goals and had some other chances.

“I don’t like to concede a goal, but now it’s important to focus against Birmingham and then the start of the season against Sunderland.

Doncaster 2 Sunderland 0

Jeremain Lens’ performance provided the sole glimmer of light as Sunderland were humbled by League One Doncaster Rovers.

Goals either side of half-time from Cedric Evina and Harry Forrester gave Paul Dickov’s Rovers victory at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Dick Advocaat: “The fitness has to be there but it was a poor result, so hopefully on Saturday we can show how far we are with our progress when we face Hannover.

"The fans were excellent today and they came down in their numbers making a long journey to back their team for 90 minutes, so hopefully we can reward their loyal support over the course of the season."

York City 2 Newcastle 1

Newcastle United suffered a 2-1 defeat away at York City in a pre-season friendly on Wednesday night.

Two goals in four first-half minutes from Anthony Straker and Trialist A gave the League Two side a comfortable lead at the break.

And although Ayoze Perez halved the deficit midway through the second period with his first goal of the pre-season campaign, the Magpies were unable to get back on level terms.
