Williams A Reported Target For Arsenal

It wouldn't be a summer if there wasn't a link with Ashley Williams and another Premier League side and this time it is Arsenal who are linked with a £20m move for our captain if you believe reports that are in the Sunday Express.

It would not be summer unless....

We have this issue every single summer when Williams is linked with a move away from the Liberty. Each year the price seems to rise and each year of course it is a more expensive deal for a player who is now approaching possibly the last deal of his career.

Williams has been here for 8 years now and I genuinely cannot remember a time when he was not linked with a move away.

Many of those links are provided (and sometimes fabricated) by his agent Jamie Moralee who of course is paid to get the best deal for his client. I suspect that the Swans have already been asked for more money for their captain to keep him at Swansea but at some point we are going to have to face up to life without a player who has been pretty much ever present since he signed from Stockport.

Maybe it is just me - and not taking anything away from Ash - but I am struggling to see why Arsenal would want to consider a £20m deal for a 32 year old defender. Could of course quite easily be wrong but you would assume that if they had that kind of budget for a central defender then they would be looking at someone younger and not someone approaching the end of their career?

Williams of course will lead Wales into the Euro 2016 campaign this summer which will make this particular transfer summer different one as it tends to mean that transfers are done later and I don't suspect that this will be the only speculation about Ash and a move away but we will do well to identify the difference between genuine interest and reports planted by an agent looking for a payrise
