Sunderland’s Ross Stewart and why Swansea won’t move for him
Monday, 28th Nov 2022 15:04 by @Cornish67David

Scotland international Ross Stewart is once again provoking headlines as to his future at Sunderland with his new contract offered by the black cats yet to be signed. If he does go ahead and decide to agree to a new deal it will not only make him the highest paid player at the club, it will see his earnings top one hundred thousand pounds a month. The swans have been linked with him this year.

The issue Sunderland have is twenty six year old Stewart is of interest to Glasgow clubs Celtic and Rangers. Being a Scotsman born and bred Stewart would surely jump at the chance to play for either club, and that’s the first reason why Swansea City won’t be keen to battle it out on the financial front for the Sunderland striker. His goal return over sixty plus games has been one goal in two, and the other issue is his current injury. The swans won’t want to sign a player who is recovering from injury after some sketchy times of late with Joe Allen.

Stewart hasn’t played since the black cats beat Rotherham at the end of August. Ross will also want to make this contract his most lucrative and will expect any club that comes in for him to exceed the amounts his current club are offering. And he wont get that at Swansea. However, the fee Sunderland will demand which we believe will be in excess of two million for the tall striker could be drastically affected as his contract expires at the end of this season. Really if he decides not to sign it he could well find himself a free agent.

Whatever Ross Stewart’s future, his injuries, salary demands and potential fee will collectively put off the swans. In Jöel Piroe and Michael Obafemi some will say Swansea have better strikers already and will be hopeful of retaining them come the end of January’s transfer window. If that of course doesn’t happen then the only solution will be a new striker, however for all the reasons given and it’s only opinion, Ross Stewart wont be at the top of any Swansea City shopping list.
