Southampton told ‘Come back and match our valuation or don’t bother’

Swansea City have made it clear to Southampton that the valuation they have on Nathan Wood is what they want for the player and the two offers for his services are ‘short of the mark’ With only the add ons massaged somewhat in a second offer the Swans have made it clear.

Match our valuation or don’t bother.

Swansea City want ten million pounds for Wood who has a sell on clause in his contract after joining from Middlesbrough last summer. How any add ons the Swans want included may well feature his Boro sell on clause we are told. Manager Michael Duff was pretty clear on the weekend after the defeat to Preston on where the club stand on Wood leaving this week. “He is a good player, that's why people want him. He's our player and he has two years left on his contract. The total value of the second bid, I don't think was any different from the first one. The sell-ons and things just got juggled around. I want a Ferrari for Christmas… He has signed his contract, he's our player and I thought he was good today. He is wanted by a club, the manager was previously here and he obviously knows him really well. But we have got a valuation on him. The club who have put the bid in have just received a lot of money and the value we think compared to the value of players being sold who are at his level - it's short of the mark."

Southampton do have a huge amount of money in their coffers after numerous player sales in the last few weeks and the Swans will not be bullied in to a low offer. Russell Martin knows the budget at Swansea and the general belief on the south coast is that Swansea will buckle as the week progresses. We have been told that isn’t the case at all. The club have banked sufficient cash for now to progress Sporting director Paul Watson’s transfer targets with Aston Villa forward Keinan Davis having completed the first part of his Swans medical yesterday. The player who will cost Swans around two million pounds has agreed personal terms.

If the Saints do come back with another offer then it has to match the Swans valuation or it’s a clear no go for Wood who has expressed a desire to leave Swansea this week. As Michael Duff has already said we can all want things in life, but at the end of the day you have to pay for them or they just don’t happen.
