No fee for Pedersen to join Swansea City ‘The full brief’
Sunday, 3rd Sep 2023 09:05 by @Cornish67David

The Swans negotiated hard to get Kristian Pedersen and this morning we can reveal that the delay in him joining Swansea City on a two year contract was down to his transfer fee.

Danish reporter for BT Sport, Farzam Abolhosseini has revealed the detail within the paperwork that has seen Pedersen join the Swans. The fee is initially zero, however the bonuses which the Swans have negotiated in his contract could mean an extremely successful two years at Swansea could see the club pay up to £340,000. That very much fits in with the figures we were told on Friday morning when Pedersen passed his medical and signed for the Swans.

The talks took some weeks but in the end with FC Köln wanting the player to leave and the Swans keen on an experienced left sided defender the deal was struck.

It’s fair to say that Pedersen didn’t have the best of times in Germany. He joined FC Köln on a free transfer from Birmingham City last summer. He played in six league games and in fact appeared in more European ties in the conference league than he did in the Bundesliga. Pedersen was often criticised by followers of Die Geißböcke (The Billy Goats) for not being up to the mark for competitive Bundesliga games. His seven conference league appearances saw his side bow out at the group stage finishing third.

That said Pedersen was out for eleven games last season with a muscle injury, he played his last game for FC Köln against Bayern Munich in that memorable match at the end of the Bundesliga season which saw Bayern win the title again. Playing at a higher level for much of his time in Germany Pedersen will bring that experience in to a very fragile Swansea defence. He played at left back predominantly last season but was also selected at centre back for his league debut.

He is a welcome added extra to the Swansea City squad so don’t be surprised to see him in the derby game in two weeks time. Here’s hoping the Swans have to pay these bonuses, that would mean Pedersen is a success at the Swans. And in a defence that needs immediate resuscitation that’s crucial.
