Liam Cullen ready to leave the Swans ?
Monday, 25th Sep 2023 06:40 by Keith Haynes

The first registered interest in Liam Cullen came back in August, now it seems Blackburn Rovers are going to come back in for Liam Cullen in January. And it’s something the player would definitely think about.

Deadline day came and went for Liam, but we know now that a deal for him to go to Blackburn Rovers was progressing well. Liam was keen to talk too, he wasn’t in any way phased by the fact he would be leaving his boyhood club for the first time permanently. The complications on the deal for Liam to leave were somewhat hampered by Blackburn midfielder John Buckley and his desire to stay in the north of England. Both Cullen and Buckley would have been used as a lever to get a better deal with both clubs wanting the players concerned. Allegedly around three million pounds was on offer from the Swans, however we question that greatly.

Buckley eventually got his way and forced a loan move to Sheffield Wednesday. He hasn’t had the best of starts to his Wednesday career in the league - but has three goals and two assists to his name in the League Cup. Context is need though that was against Harrogate Town and Walsall. In any event the deals fell through and Liam was left in limbo with deadline day gone.

We reported on Liam back in mid August, at that time it seemed he wanted to stay. That’s here —> Cullen of interest

What do we know : At the time of the news on Cullen moving to Blackburn both clubs agreed to revisit the deal in January, and in fact it gave Liam an opportunity to impress in the first team. In his seven appearances ( not all starting ) Liam has bagged a goal ( against Bristol City ) and an assist. If Blackburn are looking for a prolific goalscorer then Liam isn’t their man that’s for sure. However, the door is still open for a permanent deal for the twenty four year old.

The Swans have monitored Buckley this season, and he hasn’t really impressed the club. It’s pretty clear he is finding his time at the Owls difficult in a struggling side. What the Swans don’t need is another passenger / average Championship player. Already it is apparent too many of those were signed in the summer. On Cullen he would consider a move most certainly, he made that clear in August to some quarters, but not all, this probably signals him being in two minds. He has been at the Swans for most of his life. and will be pleased to hear the news of Blackburn’s interest for January. However, listening to a club, talking to a club and joining a club have different meanings. Cullen was clear in August to some that he wouldn’t leave Swansea, to others there seemed to be some flexibility. With a bit of skill and hard work this may well come to fruition.

With the good relationship maintained from talks in the summer transfer window this deal could go through IF Blackburn Rovers have the cash for Liam as a loan won’t be entertained as it stands.
