More Swansea injuries but there’s plenty of positives for Duff

Yesterdays 3-0 win against Millwall was head coach Michael Duff’s first away win of the season and it seems the more broader achievements so far this season are being ignored somewhat. Let’s start there this morning.

The Swans have the best goals scored column in the bottom ten of the Championship table and the best goal difference as well. The last two games against Millwall and Sheffield Wednesday actually contributing to six of the thirteen goals scored this season. The goals are being spread about a bit as well with Jerry Yates on three, Jamal Lowe on two and Mykola Kukharevych opened up his account for the Swans with a cooly taken header yesterday.

The bad news came before the game as Kristian Pedersen felt a slight groin strain in training on Friday when the Swans warmed down after travelling up a day early for yesterdays game. During the game Jerry Yates took several knocks which eventually saw him withdrawn at half time with two dead legs. Pedersen will miss Wednesday nights game against Norwich City at the Swansea.Com Stadium ( Kick Off 7.45pm ) and Yates recovery will very much depend on him being able to run pain free in the gym on Monday. We already know the injury list is extensive with Nathan Wood and Joe Allen out until early January and Josh Ginnelly for the whole season. Azeem Abdulai has several weeks of rehab and then will take on the slow progress of a return to fitness with his hamstring injury. He isn’t expected to be available until December.

Duff did comment that his squad is getting a ‘bit thin in the ground’ after yesterdays victory. Talking in those injuries he said. “Kristian Pedersen felt his groin in training. I thought he was our best player last week. We don’t know yet if he’ll be ready for the next two games but he’ll definitely be back after the international break. The Swans boss was also forced into two changes during the Millwall match with Jerry Yates and Charlie Patino coming off. Jerry took two dead legs, so we’ll just have to wait and see on that,” Duff added. Charlie was just cramp. The lads will be in tomorrow for a cooldown, so hopefully nothing else comes from that because we’re starting to get a bit thin on the ground now.”

The welcome return of Liam Walsh to the Swans bench is a bright point though. The issue with Liam is he tends to get injured quite soon after returning from injury, so it’s very much a case of wait and see with him. Mykola (below) announcing himself to the Swans fans at Millwall will give them hope that he can make the transition if he starts on Wednesday, he does have a nice look to his play and loves a challenge. Then on the ground the Swans may be this week, but the confidence is back and the hope has most certainly returned to west Wales.

Norwich City come to Swansea in seventh place in the league and will be a completely different proposition to Millwall and Sheffield Wednesday. The have scored nineteen goals this season but the Swans can take some comfort that they have conceded sixteen. They beat Birmingham City 2-0 yesterday but let’s not forget the are fallible. They shipped six at Plymouth recently and looked ragged all over the park.

Our match day build up continues over the coming days as we look forward to Wednesday evenings game.
