Swansea City : Let’s get a goalscorer on and stop the messing about
Friday, 1st Mar 2024 08:00 by Keith Haynes

We can see the Swans starting as slight favourites tomorrow, which is surprising as Luke Williams in in his third month without a home league win. In fact his record is pretty poor since starting at the Swans.

We will start this morning with his overall record in league and cup.

If Luke was well into his head coach contract the fans would now be calling for his head. Some are, however we have to take a longer view here. We have seen some progress that will please the majority of supporters. The arrival of January signings Ronald and Placheta have improved the sides attacking ability. Tomorrow signifies a big test for Williams as he goes for his first home win. Personally I’m going all out and saying that this side needs a goalscorer, but the exclusion of Mykola Kukharevych is now becoming an absolute farce. He has already displayed his ability as a goal threat for the few minutes Williams has granted him, and his insistence in playing Jerry Yates is becoming very tedious. It isn’t a good thing to continually refer to Yates negatively, but really, enough is enough. I’m really unsure what he brings to any game he has played.

One goal in fourteen games, I’ll leave that one with you.

You can look right back in time since I took over the website three and a half years ago, and this basically is the first time I’ve had a pop at any player. I’ll leave Jamie Paterson to one side because that had nothing to do with his stats and playing time, that was just a joke. That’s the negatives out of the way, so here are some positives. Had the Swans not won at Hull City it would have been seven league and cup games without a win or a draw. Oh, sorry that’s a negative right ? Well, I don’t think so the Swans have gone away now on two occasions in the league and won. They’ve done that against decent sides either looking at the play offs or in them. That doesn’t display a side who are going down (the Swans will not) That displayed a side who when they are not playing the very best in the league can take on the best that is left. Winning those games by the odd goal shows faith and belief that the manager is doing things right.

Anyone who believed that once Luke Williams arrived at the club, there would be immediate changes is bonkers. His football ethic is clearly different to Russell Martin as well bar his desire to play suicide football out from the back at times - and then persist with possession football as a catalyst to win games. Anyone think we have the players to do that ?

Not yet that’s for sure.

The Swans will face a side that had a hell of a game against Newcastle United drawing 1-1 (above) in the FA Cup before going out on penalties. Of course, that doesn’t mean they will turn up all tired and withered. John Eustace will certainly have played that midweek game with tomorrow in mind. Both clubs are on the same points with the same minus twelve goal difference, there really is nothing to split their form this season. Rovers have scored forty eight goals this season the Swans forty four. However the Swans have conceded fifty five goals, Blackburn sixty. They are dead level on goals for and against as well. That means the team with the highest goals scored take precedence. In this case Blackburn Rovers. It’s a very close thing between the two teams.

Over the last five matches between the sides we have seen the odd goal win the game, bar a 3-0 home loss for the Swans in 2022. The fixtures are generally close run things. Going back thirteen games to 2012 the Swans have lost four, drawn four and won five. Again it’s a close run thing. Dangerman is Sammie Szmodics who has scored twenty four goals in thirty six games. Next up is Arnór Sigurdsson with seven goals from thirty games.

We are seeing a different Swansea City of late, but you have to raise some concern at the treatment Ronald is getting from the opposition of late. He is fast becoming the most fouled player over the past six games in the Championship, one slip and an injury would be really impactive. We will have all our usual match day build up come Saturday morning on the Indy.

Swansea City v Blackburn Rovers kicks off at 3pm tomorrow at the Swansea.Com Stadium.
