One criticism. You have needlessly raised the spectre of the manager being poached by a Premier !eague team. Please, don’t do that again. I mean, where would it leave us? (Bereft is the answer). Can we not, for once actually be allowed nice things’.
It certainly beats having just one tactic of knocking it long onto the head of Jimmy Dunne and trying to pick up the scraps. Desperate stuff. This guy is a proper manager and I said from fairly early on that we were lucky to have him.
I’d be surprised if he lasted the weekend after losing to the mighty Lincoln. I’ve just re read the season preview for Burnley off the back of this result. There were grumbling of impending doom among the fan base before a ball was kicked it seems. Looks like they were right, although they can’t possibly be this bad going forward.
Haven’t seen anything of today’s game but I think the fact we’ve bought in some significantly better players than we’ve been used to in the truly dreadful squads we’ve had for a few years has got some people over excited about our prospects. The players we’ve brought in, I would suggest, have brought us up to the level where we should be comfortably able to tread water in the Championship this season. I think the standard of squads in the Championship has improved a lot recently and if we hadn’t shaken up our squad we’d have been relegated in this or any one of the last two years, (how we stayed up three years ago with the likes of Kakay and Dozzell I’ll never know).
I never thought a top six position was viable. We’ll do extremely well to finish 7th or 8th and I personally think that is beyond us with the amount of injuries and seriously out of form players we have (here’s looking at you Poku, Kone and Vale.
I said a few weeks ago that it wouldn’t surprise me to see a player dedicated to marking Charles in some circumstances. It would leave the opposition a player short elsewhere on the pitch but who would the opposition rather see playing an out ball - Charles or Jimmy Dunne? It would be unprecedented but for a 10 or 15 minute experiment during a game it might be effective as so many of our attacking opportunities begin with Charles.
I’d be interested to know how Charles’ style of play has impacted on Ward and Salomon. Whether they have improved as goalkeepers as a result. If they are training to emulate him (tough ask) so that it impacts us less should he get i*ju*ed and also looking forward to next season when Charles is unlikely to still be here.
A very comfortable win against a very poor team. You could view the second half as a team cruising to a comfortable win and managing their energy levels in a 3 game week. Or you could view it as a team that just completely switched off and could barely string two passes together in a very frustrating performance that allowed a team, 3 nil down, to dominate. I know which one I think it was.
Thought Varane looked like a different player (in a good way) when he came on. I’m getting rather exasperated watching yet another game pass Kwame Poku by. He doesn’t do nearly enough for me. I think he’s capable of a lot more.
Pleased Vale scored. Hopefully it’ll do wonders for his confidence because at times this season the ball and him have looked like strangers.
We seemed to have switched off after the 3rd which is a bit frustrating. I hope we can rediscover a bit more energy in the second half. We could see a cricket score.
