Sounds like Smithfields in the City (early AM opening for the Meat workers finishing overnight shift)?

Those of a certain age that worked in London (Farringdon / Moorgate / Fleet Street ) may remember likes of the Fox Pub ?

£50 return on Ryanair, with my 40x30x20 bag and no seat pre-booked !! Just about gets me 3 days worth of clothes, without having to stuff coat pockets !

I pay more to get to Southampton ! :)

Not for me. I am off to Porto for a break, but have managed to get a ticket for Porto V Gil Vicente FC on Monday night.

Big call out to those making the effort to go. Sounds like a lot of agg.

Burnley Chasing Southampton Defender
at 09:32 24 Jan 2026

I really cant see H-B going to Burnley. They will be relegated and if he has aspirations to play for England in the future (not that I think he is good enough) he will need to be in Premiership. He has no chance of making World Cup squad, so will probably see this season out and seek a move in Summer.

The E7.5k figure does seem low, especially after signing a contract in 2024. The table in link above, does say it is 'Estimated' and quotes £7.5k figure for the 2023 season in same link. I am sure there would have been a salary uplift when he signed in 2024.

Nearly paid the price for some poor finishing in 1st half. We had 4 good opportunities.

Once again we dropped off the pace in 2nd half.

I haven't seen crowd size, but loads of empty seats. My guess, around 24k ?

Just grateful for a win and a clean sheet in the end.

Predictions for tonight
at 16:08 21 Jan 2026

I am going for a draw, but will also predict:

1 of the 3 CB's will be culpable for a Sheff Utd goal

We have 70% possession but less shots/shots on target than Sheff Utd,

We have more back passes

Saints v Hull City Match Thread...
at 08:16 18 Jan 2026

The extra time was low, especially in the 1st half, where there was only 3 minutes. After they scored Hull players spent at least that, all running towards the bench, having a drink and taking new instructions etc. They repeated this on the second goal. Add this to all the rolling around, there should have been around 6 mins in first half alone.

It seems added time in first half is always a lot less in matches, unless there is a significant incident.

As for the 4 mins in second half, that was also well short. The ref kept holding his arm up to suggest he was stopping the watch. I can only assume he didn't press the button ! Last year we saw refs adding a lot of extra time across all games and regularly saw, 8,9 even 10 mins extra time. We seem to have slipped back to old ways.

All said, the extra time was not the issue yesterday, the performance, tactics and effort was the issue.

Jwp

I was a big supporter of JWP during his time here, mainly because of his dead ball skills, loyalty and leadership, but at the same time he was at the core of the slow build up and sideways/back football we want to eradicate.

It's time to move on. He served us well and will be fondly remembered by most, but he is not the answer to our problems today.

His wages would also be an issue, even if he did take a cut. Can you imagine the discontent amongst the 'so called' senior players, who already appear to be running the club, if he came in on higher wages !

Three hours (door to door) each way and £100 (train, ticket and bus replacements) to watch that Sh*t today. Only 2 players came out with any credit today - Scienza and Fellows.

As for Wood and Manning, that was the worst performance I have seen of any player for years.
Wood just look like a rabbit in headlights when he had the ball, he was slow and then stopped and did nothing.

Fellows played most of the first half almost at right back, but was obviously told to play that way, as it changed in 2nd half.

Well done to the Northam today who made their feelings known about the team and SR. hopefully, it will send a message, especially to the players who are just going through the motions and couldn't care less.

No more Baz (for now)
at 13:59 13 Jan 2026

I wish him well, but not sorry that he has moved on for time being.
Nothing really to call between Bazunu and McCarthy, they both have significant weaknesses, that have been exposed time and again.

e.g. Bazunu reaction to shots from distance and across his body, and McCarthy from near post, and weakness on ball playing out from back.

Neither command the box well or manage balls from corners/dead balls.

I am putting a lot of faith in Peretz and hope he delivers.

Linked with young gambles again - when will Sport Republic learn?
at 17:05 9 Jan 2026

If the Notts County link is Tyrese Hall, my Notts C friend (also season holder) says he is more of a Mid fielder.

When I asked about him, his exact words were, " has had some good games, scored a couple of decent goals but form has dropped recently".

Just what we need another cheap 'potential' player.

Loved the commentator comments about crowd urging team to move ball forward more quickly !

Wonder how this crowd would have reacted watching us today, if that's how they responded to just a few side-ways passes !

There was some top players on the field this day.

The eight million that left Venezuela under Maduro are probably celebrating, but for those left it is another period of uncertainty.

Whilst the Maduro regime is still in place, I don't believe either of the potential opposition candidates, Machado or Urrutia (Spain) are even in the country ? They probably also wouldn't return at this stage, given the authority that the Military still hold there. Removing the Venezuela' current government is more complex than removing Maduro.

Whilst I accept that the election was stolen from Urrutia, and the US clearly doesn't have a plan for what happens next, I am not convinced now is the time for change and bring Urratia back.

The logical and lawful approach would be to re-instate Urrutia, or hold fresh elections as soon as it is feasible and safe to do so. At the moment it looks like the US only want to deal with the former Deputy - Rodriguez. How long for is anybody guess.

The only that is clear is that Trump and his Cabinet do not have a clue what to do next.

We have had many lows over the last 12 months, but that performance was probably the worst I have seen.

They didn't have a clue. I don't even think we registered a shot after they went 1-0 up.

It could have been different if we took the 3 gilt edged chances in 1st half, but after we went 1 down, the players looked like they had just given up again.

What a scoop !

How did we keep this under the radar of the clubs, looking for a guy who's last 4 jobs were less than a year at Charlton, Colchester, Swindon and Bristol Rovers - not forgetting the role at Ghana's "Right to Dream international academy".

Back to Mattfinish's original question and World Cup, I would love to see Europe boycott the World Cup. It would send a message to Infantino and all others on the FIFA gravy train that most people are fed up with the corruption.

The World Cup would be severely weakened without European countries.

Agree with sentiment, but what if TE comes out and says he will:

1 play his best starting line up,
2 play only 2 CB's/ back 4
3 commits to getting forward quicker, and stops the tedious side to side/back passes
4 Doesn't play Fellows as wing back
5 Adopts same approach used in his first 6 games

Would this sway it for you to watch ?

" Would Burnham or Streeting really be any better than Starmer?"

Probably not, but Starmer is the PM and he looked very weak, with his lame non-committal response.

France, Italy, Germany, Norway, Canada and UN have come out strongly saying International Law must be adhered to. Trump (and his cabinet) believe they are above this.
