One more goal would have put him out front as our leading scorer for the season. So he's entitled to be annoyed.

For now he has to share top spot with Kone and Smyth.

IFR funding levy

The levy will raise £20.3m.

And they got £45m from the government for setup costs.

It's how it's done in this country.

But yeah, that is a very good question.

Those clubs putting in north of £1m each are bound to want some return on that investment.

I don't think Hull is a useful example here.

They gambled by massively overspending and got away with it.

Over the summer they had to offload £6m worth of players to avoid a points deduction.

It didn't hurt them because they were promoted, had Premier League money to spend, and those were mostly players they would have wanted off the books anyway. Although Liam Miller is wasted at Birmingham!

If Hull hadn't got promoted they would have come into this season on the back of a fire sale with a weak squad and would probably be looking at a bottom eight finish.

IFR funding levy
at 13:31 23 Oct 2026

The Independent Football Regulator wants to impose a levy on football clubs to pay for it.

It will be a sliding scale with the wealthier clubs chipping in over £1m each.

QPR and most of the other Championship clubs would pay £44k each.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/fo

"The annual cost to English clubs of the Independent Football Regulator (IFR) has risen to £20.3m, around double the amount initially estimated.

The watchdog has proposed a levy to fund operating costs of £18.3m to support 100 staff, with a further £1m to cover potential litigation.

Another £1m is towards a total estimated set-up cost of £45m, to be paid off over the next 10 years.

From next season, all regulated clubs in the top five divisions of English men's football will be required to pay for the IFR's operations.

The IFR claims it will be "a proportionate and affordable amount", however it is significantly higher than the figure forecast in a 2019 impact assessment report, before legislation was finalised.

That estimated annual operating costs between £8-10.2m, for the first 10 years.

Definitely spooky.

The Neville brothers at our club would certainly scare the bejesus out of me.

On the subject of Valencia........

Carlos Corberan is still out of work.

The Mancs could certainly do worse than him. Not that their fans would have someone who wasn't a 'name'

"Maybe Neville's turn next time."

Which one?

Or do you want to reunite the Valencia dream team?

Mancs would be better off with the Marx Brothers

Walker played 97 minutes for us, including 8 minutes in a 4-0 win against Swansea and a whole 0ne minute v Derby

Injuries are increasing.

Also injuries in pre-match warm-ups also seem to happen a lot more now than in the past.

There could be all sorts of reasons to explain that, but surely the pitch has to be worth considering.

Maybe there isn't enough give in hybrid pitches that for players that are twisting and turning.

Maybe they become difficult to play on if they get too wet.

Who knows. I don't have any solid evidence to back that up. but these are multi-million pound assets so you would think someone somewhere would be trying to figure it out.

Clive mentioned earlier that some clubs seem to have a particular problem with recurring injuries. So looking for a common factor there might be a logical starting point. Not that any of them would want to compare notes mid-season, cos you know, competitive advantage!

Just because they look the part doesn't mean there can't be a problem.

Pitches that are hard or soft to play on have been linked to increased injury risk.

Hybrid pitches like ours play differently from grass and have been linked to increased injuries in rugby:

And that in a game where we were 4-0 up and didn't need to take any risks.

The same game where Madsen (who we now know to be crocked) was also on the bench.

Is the team doctor only working one day a week!?

And it's not even the first time this year that we have had players dropping like flies in a game we had well won.

A load of players went off injured when we beat Sheffield Wednesday at home in January

Some of the decision making around player fitness and maintenance seems to leave a lot to be desired.

Not necessarily.

If the issues were down to wear and tear and/or poor maintenance of the pitches then those problems might not happen in the first season but could increase over time.

Agree with all of that.

But for me the number of players looking for physical conditioning or rehab support outside of the club has to be a big red flag.

A few years ago when we had crap facilities that might have been understandable, but now we have an expensive and state of the art training ground.

I had forgotten about Dougie Freedman.

He was unfortunate to be coming through the youth setup at the same time as Kevin Gallen and Danny Dichio who were just ahead of him in the pecking order. We'll never know how good those three together might have been for us in the first team.
