Won’t quote the piece again to save space, but just to say I’ve had to have a lie down after reading it. Talk about going the extra mile. Quite remarkable and a thoroughly interesting insight into the process. I do have one criticism though, which relates to point 4 (Sunday morning): You talk about having a bacon sandwich - so far, so good - ‘with lots of sauce’. Now this raises more questions than answers and I don’t mind admitting I’m not entirely clear about one fundamental point: would this be red sauce or brown sauce? I think we should be told. |

Thought I’d seen him somewhere before. |

Ah, the Bullworker. Sort of evolved from strongman Charles Atlas’s ‘Dynamic Tension’ 11-part mail order course originally created in the 1920’s (‘Turns Weaklings Into Men!’) Found the full set in the attic following my Dad’s passing three years ago. Not entirely sure they’d ever been opened. |

As a self-conscious teenager in the mid-70’s I was particularly concerned with the appearance of my hair (I had it then). I even went so far as to show a picture of Phil Parkes to ‘Mr Bugden’, a peculiar man who provided a mobile barbering ‘service’ to the kids in our local neighbourhood, asking for a similar style. Needless to say Mr Bugden’s expertise hadn’t been acquired through an apprenticeship with Vidal Sassoon and I ended up looking more like the comedian Emo Philips. I eventually managed to persuade my Mum to invest in a device which I had seen advertised in the back pages of the Melody Maker (along with the loon pants and patchouli oil) that seemed to offer up the possibility of styling your own hair, thus saving the expense of regular trips to the barbers. The gadget, two pieces of plastic with short and long prongs at ether end between which you had to insert a razor blade, duly arrived and I eagerly prepared for my first (and last, as it turned out) DIY haircut. Placing the device at the crown of my head I swept the thing forward only to realise that all I had done was leave a 6” x 2” bald furrow, surrounded by thick, long hair, down the middle, a sort of reverse Mohican. It looked like I was being prepared for brain surgery. Mum’s sympathetic words provided scant comfort: “Never mind, love, it’ll grow back”. |

Your obsession with ‘rearranging’ things reminded me of the time a mischievous lady friend and I found ourselves staggering around Borough Market after a livener or two at the Royal Oak in Tabard Street. Chancing upon a stall displaying dozens of obscure English apples we thought it would be hilarious to swap the signs indicating the names and origin of each one to see if anyone would be able to tell the difference. Thus a Beverley Pippin became a Knobby Russet, a Bloody Ploughman a Beauty of Bath and so on until our work was complete. Utterly infantile, of course, and an act that can only be explained (if not excused) by the brewers of Harvey’s ale. |

Did you not think to continue the tradition established at the Woolpack Inn, Gracelands and the centre circle at Vicarage Road by earlier contributors to this thread, though? A huge dereliction of duty if not. |

Didn’t the chap who scored our 90th-minute winner against Derby in the 2014 Wembley play-off final feature in a TV fishing series too? ‘Roe, Bobby Zamora!’ I’ll get my coat. |

Barefoot? So you were ‘Paul’ then! I used to get asked a lot by tourists to go to the Abbey Road zebra crossing. The other two popular destinations were Carnaby Street (a huge disappointment) and the King’s Road (‘we want to see some punks’). Was always happy to oblige but couldn’t help thinking, ‘You’re fifty years too late’. |
