Yes and No. Derry was still at the club in the 2013 close season but didn't play at all and became Notts County manager a few months into the season. Mackie was at Nottingham Forest that 2013/14 play off season (joined the fakes the season after when we were embarrassing ourselves in the Prem and joined us again the following season). Plus his and Osborne's political choice of austerity which the IMF called unnecessarily harsh and deep and counterproductive in the long run which most of our public services are still feeling the effect of today.
The economy just before the 2010 election was starting to recover and austerity killed that recovery stone dead. |

Definitely not guaranteed to get elected.
I grew up in Camberley and when I still lived there (last in 2012), he was my MP. The local council (Surrey Heath) had been solidly Tory and had always been the ruling party, often with very large majorities since the local government reorganisation in 1974. At one of the council elections in 1983 every one of the seats was Tory.
Even up to the 2015 local election they had 36 of the 40 seats. This changed in 2019 as the Lib Dems had been slowly gathering support and the Tories only just had a majority (18 out of 35). Come the 2023 local election I saw something I never thought would happen; not only were the Tories not the ruling party, they were absolutely obliterated, only 6 councillors elected with just a 17% share of the vote. Lib Dems got control with 24 out of 35.
I suppose in a roundabout way I'm saying that Gove saw the writing on the wall from last year and knew he would be on very thin ice in this election. [Post edited 26 May 14:19]

Yes Terry but as I've stated elsewhere, Woods when he came to us was a young kid, younger than Walsh is now and his only first team appearances for Forest had been the League Cup games he played for the cup tied Shilton in 77/78, although some very big games there including the final and the final replay.
When he came to us in '79 he was basically learning on the job. He had though a European Cup winners medal in his pocket when he came to us as his last game for Forest was the 1979 European Cup Final where he was on the bench.
I never rated him when he played for England but you don't have the long club career he went on to have if you can't play a bit. [Post edited 20 May 10:57]

Good point there. They haven't got a PL club within a hundred miles of them. In fact they haven't really got that many football league teams in their immediate vicinity either and most of those are L1/L2 teams. [Post edited 15 May 9:55]

Rowett certainly had sussed him out ultra quickly. One game was enough for him, well not even one game, 36 minutes of the second half where he'd come on as sub to know he'd seen enough. That was on the 1st April (some irony there). |

The thing with Woods though is that he was still just a kid (not quite 20) when he came to us and an absolute baby in goalkeeping terms. Brian Clough trusted him enough at 18 to keep goal for the cup tied Shilton in their run to winning the League Cup in 77/78. That would be unthinkable doing that nowadays, trusting your 18 year old youth team/reserves goalkeeper in a Wembley cup final. He was also on the bench in the 1979 European Cup final the following season.
Cloughie knew he was never going to replace Shilton at Forest in the short term which is why he probably sold him to us. |

I always thought Terry Venables bombed him out too early after he took over. Seemed over keen I thought to get John Burridge in from Palace ASAP. |

Yes!
Although at the time we got good money from West Ham for him (£800k I think IIRC), I always thought it was a sideways move for him as in the season just gone we'd finished above them in the second division. |

Think it was earlier than that mate. His missed penalty in the 1988 Cup Final he did a stutter in his run up and IIRC he'd been taking them like that all that season and hadn't missed until that point. |
