My fave is Carry on Girls–a much underrated entry, usually overlooked because a. both Williams and Hawtrey don't appear, b. Robin Askwith was drafted in from the successful "Confessions" porn series (to poor effect) and most of all c. because it was released in 73, when Carry On purists are a little bit snobbish about the films after 71's Convenience.

But Girls has everything - saucy bikinis, Babs Windsor and Sid James at the pinnacle of their thespian art, a great storyline - a public convenience opening ceremony and consequent Women's Lib protest - Kenneth Conner in his career-defining role, cat fights, a bun fight, Sims, Butterworth, Bresslaw, script by Talbot Rothwell and most of all Margaret Nolan's gigantic 1970s norks, when norks reached the apotheosis of perfection - they were too small before and have been too small ever since. Tell me I'm wrong...

2nd has to be Cleo – what an epic, and includes the "infamy" line, widely regarded as the all-time greatest screen pun.

3rd for me is Screaming, for atmosphere, sets, plot, story and gags, even if James didn't appear, Corbett filled his shoes brilliantly (with his foul feet smell something 'orrible).

The very best Carry On moment, though, takes place in Jungle, when a rather young Joan Sims is taking a makeshift shower. Frankie Howerd, Kenneth Connor and Sid James pop their heads out of their tent, each above the last, to cop a look - and the three most recognisable voices in British Comedy say in succession
"oooOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooh"
"Coooorrrrrrr"
"Yah yah yah ha ha yack"

unparalleled genius

In 1968-69 my girlfriend was Jennifer Pyle, one of Carry on girls, she appeared in several Carry on films, including Carry On Camping.
I spent a day at one of her 'shoots' at Booker airfield in High Wycombe..the one where Babs Windsor lost her bra..
I last saw her at Wycombe Wanderers v Saints game a few years back, she was working at Tescos Loudwater, in High Wycombe, a far cry from her Hollywood dreams.
Here she is on the right as you look at it..the one with the long black hair

Another Wycombe fan was Peter Rodgers, the producer of the Carry On films. I went to few parties at his house just outside Beaconsfield, meet a few of the cast. We became fairly good friends and he and his wife were guests at my wedding. When my first child was born at Wycombe hospital, he and his wife send my missus the biggest fruit hamper you ever seen..

Carry on films have a special place in my heart for those reasons.

I saw Jennifer Pyle playing the role of Helena in Midsummer Nights dream at Inverness theatre once. She was awful, She fluffed her lines, fell over on stage and her singing was completely out of tune.

my 'kids' have no interest in supporting NCFC, one works for them, but supports Wycombe.
One supports Tottenham, the other two are Saints fans..

Peter Rodgers was an interesting character. He gained the reputation as being a right old scrooge.
He once said he would do anything for his carry on cast, except pay them.
When he died he left a fortune to charities.

Peter Rogers certainly kept a tight reign on expenses. Only one Carry On film ever needed a day's extra shooting at the studios. It is remarkable how low the budgets were, considering the size of the casts and the number of technicians involved in building the sets.

They certainly saved on travel expenses. Apparently, when Carry on Abroad was announced, the cast were looking forward to going to Spain. Instead they ended up in a sandpit in the car park at Pinewood Studios. About as exotic as the location shooting got was when they went to Wales to film Carry on Up the Khyber.

Carry on Sergeant is on C5 now.
