Dunne, Simpson or Barton? 10:05 - Oct 22 with 5152 viewsPhilmyRs

From the promotion team which of the 3 mentioned above would you say we miss the most at the moment?

I’ve got to say all 3, purely on performances on the pitch are proving a big loss. Simpson was Mr dependable, up and down the right side all day and seemed to have decent positional sense for an attacking full back. Shows what specialising in a position can do for you.

Barton, massively missing him on the pitch. People often highlighted the times he gave the ball away, his speculative passes etc, but the guy never hid. He always wanted the ball, always gave 100% and never stopped running, pressing and hassling the opposition. I said at the time I agreed with getting rid of him purely because of how he acted and the money he was on but always stated we were a better team with him in then without. I didn’t realise until now how we do miss him.

And finally Dunne, I didn’t appreciate at the time just how much of a useful job this guy did. The key thing, ignoring the experience and leadership side of things, was that he could handle a physical contest with the opposition, in fact I’d say he thrived on it. What we have now are centre backs that rarely attack the ball and bully the striker they’re marking. More often than not they get bullied themselves.

I think it’s a close call between all 3 on whose most missed, but for games like the other night and Blackburn at home we were crying out for a bit of energy and somebody to take the game by the scruff. He didn’t always do it successfully, but he always tried to, and for that reason I’d say Barton is the player we miss most from the last promotion team.

Dunne.

I'm guessing most people will say him too.

I don't miss Barton at all.

I don’t miss Barton and what he represented and agreed with the decision to let him go. I do miss what he added to the team on the pitch though.

Dunne for sure, he was brilliant at this level and fitness allowing would probably have shored up our defence and offered a bit of leadership so badly lacking.

Barton wouldn't have improved things much, Toszer is pretty much the same player for giving the ball away needlessly.

Simpson would have been a big improvement, but he's a nasty piece of work and hardly pulling up trees at Leicester.

Don't miss any of them really.
Dunne had a pretty bad second half to the season before coming good again in the attritional moments v Wigan and Derby, but overall he struggled as the season wore on.
Simpson was dependable, and did get up the line, but one good cross per season is not enough (plus he seems like a nasty piece of work - although it was still stupid to sell him when we did).
Barton I'll never miss, ever.

Bare bones.

Dunne would be useful at the moment but don't really miss any of them

Yep, missing that Dunne/Hill axis.
Don't ever talk about missing Barton, behave. That's like saying 'oh I miss those piles. Since I got rid of them life's become more boring.'

Looking at how weak we are down the right side and Perch looking like he’s just started the game, I’m surprised more people don’t miss Simpson. A serious weakness of the team would be addressed by having someone of his ability in the side. One less thing for Ramsey to worry about.

I’m also surprised how people are overlooking the fear in the players at the moment. Nobody are showing for the ball, nobody wants it and I don’t just mean the ball, I mean to win football matches. Barton had a nasty streak, but he always stepped onto the pitch and wanted to get something from the game and demanded 100% commitment from himself and everyone else.

I agree he wasn’t as good as he thought, gave some really basic passes away, but just by wanting to win, not going into his shell when the crowd were in a hostile mood is just what we need on the pitch right now. We have no leadership or nobody that sees winning as everything with the exception of Austin.

I’d say if Barton had been selectable, we would certainly have more points than we do now.

Good thread.

I'd have Dunne and Simmo back. Barton knows where to stick it by now.

Definitely Dunne. Would be a huge addition in the championship.

you know we got relegated twice with Barton in the team, right? And he single-handedly cost us games on about 5 occasions?

Bare bones.

A (fit) Dunne brought a degree of stability and control similar to a (fit) Nelsen.

Used to love watching Simpson bombing up and down and rarely missing a tackle. Shame about the total inability to cross. Still, after yet another crap delivery had handed possesion over again you just new he'd be back in a nano second, sticking his leg into a crucial tackle Unlike Isla who could cross but looked like he'd never tackled anyone in his life (yes I know has a fullback, etc)

Losing Barton is like giving up smoking. Never to be considered again unless when particularly pissed at 2am. #

So of those three, give that one is crocked/retired and one is certifiable it would have to be Simpson.

(but not really because it's hard to explain his extra-curricular activities to my 8 year old daughter.

And you know we got promoted with Barton as captain right? We can all go over the mistakes he made in the premiership and perhaps the saying ‘not good enough for the prem, too good for the champ’ is appropriate but right now (in the championship) what he does which I’ve listed above would make a huge difference right now.

This.

I mean Zamora would be useful at the moment but thank fck he was one of the old cnts on MASSIVE money whose contract ended. Players like that have had quite enough out of us with very little return.

Simpson.
We have Hill to bring in for experience in the back four instead of Dunne.
Simpson was a good "natural" RB. Better than Perch.
I'm not sure what Barton would actually bring to improve this team except he's a mouthy git.
Are we missing a mouthy git. ? Imagine his twittering around at the moment ..

Yeh Simpson for me.

We need a commanding centre back.

The incredible thing about Dunne was that after a year out of the game injured not only did he give us a season in the Championship, but he also gave us a season in the Premiership (when Rio Ferdinand melted away).

Mina Rzouki was saying the other day on the World Football Phone-in that there is an international shortage of skilled centre-backs and other defensive players - that is why players in those positions at the top level are changing hands for huge fees.

I dont miss Barton, as we already have players who are capable, e.g Luongo could drop further back and do a good job, Faurlin (could start games at least and subbed if needbe). Unfortunately Ramsay doesnt use them

For me, Dunne and Simpson are missed the most. Dunne for his presence at the back, and SImpson simply because we should never have gotten rid of him in the first place. He was a very reliable player and when he was injured in the season we went up, he was one player we missed the most.

Simpson. Should walk into the team easily as Perch is not exactly winning match day awards. Simpson was a no brainer selection and a leader. however S already said before the RB spot should belong to Furlong.

Dunne. Again a leader on and off the pitch. BUT would probably clash with CR.
Zam was not on big wages btw. In fact Zam probably would be on lower wages than Polter or Jet.
Zam is currently being used at Brighton as he should have been at QPR.

This team could certainly do with a mouthy git. They're like eleven Sargent Wilson's at the moment,
"I say chaps, would you mind awfully forming a defensive line over here. That's the idea. Good.
Now we can all have one Godfrey's sister's upside cakes"

Strong and stable my arse.

We've got enough midfielders who can't pass the ball or take a set piece already without bringing another one back for 60k a week + associated aggro.

We miss Dunne in the sense that we haven't had a centre half who's dominant in the air all season - which is why Hill looked good the other night.

I miss shouting "Oh, Barton!" 12 times a game, as another Hollywood ball sailed into touch, another free kick hit the wall and another corner was headed clear by the first defender. And I miss seeing a QPR player picking up stupid and wholly avoidable cards. And I miss having a QPR player who was always telling the papers what a joke the club is and how is too good for it.
