Bazunu 22:57 - Feb 27 with 6014 viewscocklebreath

Just read some stats about him and it seems he’s as bad as I thought. Bottom of every goalie this season and apparently the worst stats ever for a premier league goalie, saving just 55% of shots. As a team we have the 5th least shots on goal against this season but only 2 teams have conceded more. I can’t believe how bad our goalies have been, McCarthy was the worst in the league last season and he’s far superior to young Bazunu.
What a sh!t show.

Yet Baz came across as a very confident keeper, on Talksport, last Friday. It is a shame he cannot do his talking on the pitch.

Saving that Ronaldo penalty for Ireland has clearly made him think he is better than he actually is.

You have to question why 3 successive managers keep playing him though. He's been making the same basic errors the entire season and it's glaringly obvious the lad needed to be taken out of the firing line months ago. It's almost as though they've been told to keep picking him.

As well as Elyounoussi, Diallo and now Bednarek.

had macarthy been fit bazunu would have been dropped months ago,not a good thought i will admit.

You're right, it's not a good thought, but Bazunu definitely needs dropping. Wtf is the point in Willy if he can't get in the side under those circumstances?

The stats are from Saint Matty 76 on Saintsweb. The most glaring point is that statistically Bazunu is the worst goalkeeper in the entire history of the Premier League (McCarthy being the 2nd worst) and that with just about any other goalkeeper Saints wouldn't even be in the relegation zone now. If we'd kept Forster, we'd probably be lower mid-table at worst.

This is his post in full:

"Just a quick disclaimer that a few people are going to moan about this post so if you're one of them, please just don't read it. Nobody cares if you think it's nonsense or you can't/don't want to understand it, it's not meant for you. It is just a further indication of quite how bad Bazunu has been this season.

The best way to judge keepers statistically is post-shot expected goals, as it actually takes into account the level of the shot being taken. If a player scores from 40 yards from a shot of 0.01 xG, it doesn't reflect properly on the fact that a keeper has a far larger chance than 0.01 of saving it. Bazunu has a PSxG of -11.1, which means statistically he's conceded 41 goals where the expectation is just 25.9. The most interesting thing about that to me is the fact that 25.9 is actually the 6th lowest in the league, behind just Newcastle, City, Arsenal, Brighton and United. 5 times who are a million miles further up the league than we are. This indicates that we haven't been terrible defensively this season, we've just been drastically let down by a goalkeepers underperformance. For comparison to the rest of the league, the next worst is Leeds (Meslier) at -5.8.

It's actually statistically the worst season by a goalkeeper in Premier League history. Bazunu has also made 54 saves in the league, with only Arsenal, Brighton and City's keepers making less. This has him at a 55% save rate, meaning he's now almost conceding a goal for any save he has to make. We have had 92 shots on target against us, which again is within the top 5 of the league. The argument here could be that our defenders are constantly leaving him in situations where he's not able to make the saves, but that's why the PSxG number above disproves that point.

TLDR - statistically we are within the top 5 fewest chances and shots on target faced each game, but Bazunu's underperformance is both the worst in the league by almost double, and the worst the PL has seen."

In terms of influencing results, goalkeeper is the most important player in a team. Successful teams always have a good one. Having the worst condemns you to fail.

The warning signs were there. In this game, Bazunu let in 4 goals from just 5 shots on target:

Unfortunately it's not just about the goals costing us point but in imprtant games like the last one give them to rivals.
He's not been good enough for all season, conceding from a lot off saveable efforts.
Caballero doesn't by any means fill me with confidence from the bit I've seen from him, but you have to wonder if he really can be any worse...

Comparing the expected goals against vs. the goals Bazunu did concede gives a more than sad look and well, that translates directly to the league table.

He needs a break, the poor lad must be shell shocked playing behind our defence .

Simple maths really. Combine a relatively poor shot stopper at one end with a forward line that scores a pathetic amount of goals the other - and Bob's your uncle.

Our defence has been one of the 5 best in the Premier League this season for fewest chances and shots allowed. It's one area where we had significantly strengthened until Bednarek was brought back. I guess with him in the team again, we'll have started conceding more chances and shots.

Bazunu would be a hell of a lot more shell shocked if he played behind one of the worst defences. But, I agree, at his age, he shouldn't be thrust in at this level as a first choice goalkeeper. Neither should the other youngster, Meslier at Leeds.

Leno was the obvious keeper to try and sign in the Summer. No surprise at all he is doing as well as he is.

Yes, and at 30, he is at his peak. He was a bargain for £3 mill.

The new Kelvin Davis.

Another over-rated keeper who had a very high ratio for goals conceded : shots faced.

Yep. Bazunu should be at his peak in 2035. Either that or, like Tommy Fore-past, working as a mini-cab driver.

More Bazunu stats from Saint Matty 76:

1-2 vs Wolves, 2 shots on target faced
0-1 vs Forest, 1 shot on target faced
1-2 vs Fulham, 2 shots on target faced
1-4 vs Newcastle, 4 shots on target faced

Bazunu's super power seems to be to be a miraculous ability to let shots go straight through him. Sometimes when you look at how he's let a goal go through him, you think, how on earth did he do that? Surely, any ordinary mortal from the crowd, lacking his super power, would have stopped at least one of them.

It's a sobering thought that all of the money Saints' fans have paid to the club this season wouldn't cover the millions spent on Nathan Jones and Bazunu. It's just as well for him that Ankersen and co are clueless at stats or, like Nathan Jones, he wouldn't be as rich as he is today.

We all know he is young, still learning etc and will make mistakes, but you are being a little harsh on him with those examples because...

Wolves - there is no accounting for Bednarek dribbling it into his own net
Forest - the piss poor pass from Lyanco to give Forest a 2 on 1 scenario that ultimately cost us the game
Fulham - massive JWP deflection for the 1st, awful defending for the 2nd, free header at the front post for the flick on and 2 queuing up unmarked at the back post to finish.
Newcastle - embarrassing for keeper and defence alike, not to mention Elyounoussi and Adams missing absolute sitters whilst the game was still finely poised.

Goals change games and unfortunately for us, in our games, goals are usually the ones we concede.

"Statistically the worst goalkeeper in the history of the Premier League"

Of course he is still too young to be playing in goal at this level and might well improve in the future. If you want to do well in the Premier League, you need a goalkeeper who is in his late 20s or early 30s.

He must surely be extending his lead as statistically the worst goalkeeper in the history of the Premier League. It's a record that may never be broken.
